BACKBY
· v1.0.0
About
BACKBY helps you know when to keep going, when to prepare to turn, and when it’s time to head back.
Designed for walking, running, hiking, cycling and other outdoor activities, BACKBY helps you explore without constantly calculating whether you still have enough time or distance to return.
BACKBY does not simply tell you to turn around halfway. It uses your actual progress and return estimate to calculate when you should head back, so the turnaround point can change as your outing develops.
THREE GOAL MODES
Back By Time
Set the actual clock time you want to be back at your starting point.
Out For Time
Set how long you want the complete outing to last.
Out For Distance
Set the total distance you want the complete outing to cover.
BACKBY guides you through clear states:
KEEP GOING – you have room to continue.
TURN SOON – you are approaching the calculated turnaround point.
TURN AROUND – it is time to head back.
RETURNING – tracks your progress towards the start and updates your predicted arrival.
BACK AT START – confirms you have returned to the starting area.

SETUP
BACKBY is a Connect IQ data field.
Add BACKBY to a data screen within the Garmin activity you want to use, such as Run, Walk, Hike or Bike.
Before starting the activity, open the activity settings, scroll to CONNECT IQ FIELDS, select BACKBY and choose a Goal Mode:
• Back By Time
• Out For Time
• Out For Distance
Then set your target, Safety Buffer and Turn Soon warning.
HOW THE MODES WORK
Back By Time
Choose the actual time you want to arrive back. Your target remains fixed while ARRIVE BACK shows BACKBY’s current predicted return time.
Out For Time
Choose the total duration of your outing. BACKBY calculates when you should turn using your progress and estimated return. It is not simply a halfway timer.
Out For Distance
Choose the total distance of your outing. BACKBY monitors your progress and calculates when you should turn rather than simply using a fixed halfway point.
SAFETY BUFFER
Adds extra margin so BACKBY does not plan your return right to the absolute limit.
For time modes it is set in minutes.
For Out For Distance it is set as a distance.
TURN SOON
Provides advance warning before the calculated turnaround point.
For time modes it is set in minutes.
For Out For Distance it is set as a distance.
RETURN NOW
If you decide to head back early, use RETURN NOW where available. BACKBY switches to return guidance and begins tracking your progress towards the start.
RETURNING
While returning, BACKBY can show:
• Estimated time or distance to the start
• Predicted arrival time
• Whether you are ahead of or behind your target
• Progressive blue return ring
Arrival is based on your actual GPS position, not simply a timer reaching zero.
ALERTS
BACKBY can alert you at important stages such as TURN SOON, TURN AROUND and falling behind. Alerts depend on your Garmin device and its sound/vibration settings.
IMPORTANT
BACKBY is a return-planning aid, not a navigation system. GPS accuracy, terrain, route choice, stops and speed changes can affect predicted arrival times. Always use your own judgement and appropriate navigation tools in unfamiliar or hazardous areas.
