About

▶ Video guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8OzcDjka-4 Running your first backyard ultra, or tired of doing the timing in your head? Backyard keeps every loop, fixed start and recovery countdown on your Garmin so you can focus on moving, eating and getting ready to go again. • Start with the standard format: 6.706 km / 4.167 mi every 60 minutes. • Make the race yours: choose kilometres or miles, set a loop from 10 m to 50 km, set the window in HH:MM:SS, and set up to 200 loops—or 0 for no limit. Vibration, tones, Auto loop and start backlight are configurable. • Never miss the next start: deadlines follow the real clock and never drift. After each loop, NEXT START counts down and can alert you at 5, 2 and 1 minute, 10 seconds and the start. • Bank loops automatically or manually: Auto loop closes a loop when GPS reaches your distance. Turn it off for a measured course and press BACK/LAP yourself; an early press asks for confirmation. • Plan your recovery before you finish: EST. BREAK uses your average pace for the current loop to estimate how much break time you are on track to earn—useful for pacing, food, clothing or a quick stop. • See what matters now: LIVE shows current heart rate and a steadier current pace, rounded to five-second steps, while running or recovering. The main page keeps loop distance, time, average pace and average heart rate together; TOTAL and RUN TIMES show the bigger picture. • Choose how Garmin Connect records each cycle. Example: 50 minutes running + 10 minutes recovery: – Run only: one 50-minute running lap; recovery is excluded from Garmin timer time, distance and pace. – Full lap: one 60-minute lap containing the run and recovery. – Run / break: a 50-minute Run lap followed by a 10-minute Break lap; recovery movement is included in activity totals. Garmin still names the rows Lap 1, Lap 2 and so on; Backyard’s Phase field identifies Run, Break or Full loop. • Continue after a restart: race progress is saved on the watch at every transition and can return on the same fixed schedule. Watch the preview video above for the complete setup and every screen. No account, companion phone app or network is required. There is no subscription, advertising or analytics. GPS remains active during the race. Backyard is a dedicated race timer—not navigation, coaching or a training plan—and is independent of Garmin and race organisers.

What's new

Added compatibility with fēnix 9 Pro 47 mm AMOLED. This update also includes the safe touch-navigation improvements below. Touch remains active during a race: vertical swipes navigate between LOOP, LIVE, TOTAL and RUN TIMES. Taps, holds, drags, flicks and horizontal swipes never change the race state. Only a physical START button press can pause and open the race menu, and only a physical BACK/LAP button press can bank a loop manually. Critical race, result and recovery menus remain button-only: finishing, discarding, early loop banking and choosing a new race require physical-button confirmation, and a recovered race cannot be discarded by touch. After a real pause or interruption, TRACKING GAP hides misleading average pace and break estimates until the next clean loop. If 2 km of tracking are missing, the app shows TRACKING GAP and hides the break estimate instead of showing a misleading negative break.
