Butterfly

Free during development period. Butterfly puts a living animal on your wrist. Four wings, drawn as real outlines rather than a stored picture, resting open around the time. Every so often they close and open again — a slow flap, not a loop. It comes when you raise your wrist, and never more than once in half an hour, so it stays something you catch rather than something you wait for. The wings are your day. Give each one a metric and its colour moves as that metric moves: steps on one, floors on another, calories, distance, active minutes, Body Battery, stress, sleep. Thirty metrics for each wing and for the rim ring, forty-five for the two readouts beside the animal. Every wing and the rim ring can carry its own target, set by hand or left to follow the goal your watch already keeps. A wing deepens toward its accent through the day and turns it outright when the goal lands, so progress is something you notice on the animal rather than a number you have to read. Prefer it plainer? Run progress as arcs along the wing edges instead, or leave the colour alone entirely. Wear it two ways. The time can sit above the butterfly with the animal whole beneath it, or move into the body, framed by a ring that fills as your goal fills. Around the rim each gauge reads out as a percentage or as the figure itself, so the number is there without crowding out the animal. Choose the animal. Four wing shapes, from a long swallowtail to a broad moth, and five markings across them — a pale crescent, soft bands, fine veins, spots, or nothing at all. Eleven colourways, from the turquoise-and-magenta Morpho and the orange Monarch through to three neon treatments that light the wings from within. Three sizes, so the butterfly can fill the dial or sit quietly inside it. Change it from the watch. Hold the menu button on the face and the choices you actually reach for are right there: colourway, wing shape and markings, with size and clock position a step behind. Each picker draws the real animal instead of a list of words. No phone, no app, no waiting for a sync. It answers to you. Colour the forewings, the hindwings, their bands, the body and the accent by hand, or let the colourway decide all six. Thin the rim to a whisper, thicken it, or take it away. Fill each wing flat or graded from root to tip. Your battery rides on the body as quiet segments; alarms, notifications and do-not-disturb share a line above. Four levels of date, in your watch's language or in English. Always-on keeps the shape. The wings thin to outlines in four quadrants around the time, at whichever of three sizes you prefer, dimmed and burn-in safe.
