Locus Fit — Sprint Kayak & Canoe (Beta)
· vv1.2.7
About
BETA — boat-mounted stroke rate for sprint kayak and canoe. Live SPM,
distance per stroke, SR zone alerts, fully customizable data screens.
## Full description
** LOCUS FIT IS IN BETA ** — it's stable and used daily by a competitive
squad, but you may hit rough edges. Stroke-rate tuning across devices and
conditions is still improving, and we ship updates frequently. Feedback goes
straight to the roadmap: [email protected].
Locus Fit turns your Garmin into a sprint paddling computer. Mount the watch
on your boat — reading the hull's motion directly gives stroke-rate accuracy
that wrist-worn apps can't match — and get the numbers that matter for K1,
K2, K4, C1 and C2 training.
WHAT YOU GET (no account needed)
• Live stroke rate (SPM) tuned for sprint kayak and sprint canoe
• Distance per stroke (DPS) — the efficiency number, live and in your FIT file
• Pace, speed, heart rate, distance, timer
• Fully customizable data screen: 1 to 6 fields, every slot your choice
• Stroke-rate zone alerts: set your band, feel distinct buzzes for too fast,
too slow, and back in zone
• Optional RPE logging on save
• Warmup Start: record your warmup, then start every crew member's timer from
zero with one press — synced pieces on the water
• SPM, DPS, roll and surge recorded as chart-ready fields in Garmin Connect,
plus avg stroke rate, total strokes and avg distance per stroke in the
activity summary
• ANT+ stroke-rate broadcast for coach displays
• Touchscreen locks while paddling — spray can't stop your session
COACHING PLATFORM (PILOT SQUADS ONLY)
Structured workouts — pieces, rests, SR/pace/HR target bands, live compliance
— sync to the watch for squads on the Locus Fit coaching platform. This side
is still being refined with our pilot squad and isn't self-serve yet; coaches
who want in can reach out at locus.fit.
IMPORTANT — MOUNT YOUR WATCH
Stroke detection assumes the watch is rigidly attached to the boat (foredeck
mount, rail mount, or factory mount point). Wrist wear or taped-on rigs
degrade the signal. Visit locus.fit for mounting options.
Free paddling mode works out of the box: pick your sport, press start, paddle.

What's new
What's New (v1.2.3/4/5/6)
- Field Reliability & Freeze Prevention: Added top-level crash recovery to the main timer loop and numerical NaN protections across sensor math and GPS dropouts. Your elapsed time, distance, and session timer will never freeze or drop while paddling under bridges or heavy tree cover.
- Warmup Start & Cooldown Phase Tracking: Hardened wall-clock session timing and phase tracking (`PHASE_WARMUP`, `PHASE_ACTIVE`, `PHASE_COOLDOWN`) recorded directly to FIT files (`warmup_sec`, `cooldown_sec`, `session_phase`) so warmup and cooldown volumes are cleanly separable in Garmin Connect analysis.
- Cooldown Mode: Added optional Cooldown mode directly accessible from the paused save menu (Settings/Cooldown toggle), allowing athletes to seamlessly log post-workout cooldown distance and time without diluting main piece metrics.
- GPS Signal Dropout Protection: Automatic target-band neutrality during GPS loss prevents false out-of-range vibration alert loops and protects your workout compliance scores.
- Touchscreen & Gesture Navigation Fixes: Fixed an issue on touch devices (including Venu 3) where swiping back on the Discard Confirmation prompt would exit the app and auto-save the session. Swiping back now cleanly returns to the Pause / Resume menu.
- Instinct 3 Device Support: Full support for the new Garmin Instinct 3 family (Instinct 3 AMOLED 45mm/50mm, Instinct 3 Solar 45mm, Instinct Crossover, Instinct E).
- Instinct 2 Subscreen Optimization: Re-targeted the KM distance metric directly into the Instinct 2 top-right circular subscreen cutout for clean, readable numbers with zero text clipping.
- Smart Kayak Engine Defaults: Gyro Stroke-Rate Guard and Gravity-Frame Detection are now enabled by default for Kayak paddling, keeping stroke rate rock-solid regardless of wrist or boat mounting orientation.
