Race Proximity Field
· v1.1.2
About
Race Proximity is a data field for Garmin Edge cycling computers that shows how far ahead and behind you the nearest tracked competitors are, updated live during your race.
Built for ultra-distance events where you spend hours between checkpoints and have no idea who's closing in — or how big your lead really is — Race Proximity turns your bib number and the race's public tracking feed into a simple, glanceable readout: distance to the runner or rider immediately ahead, distance to the one immediately behind, and which way each gap is trending.
What it shows
• Distance to the nearest competitor ahead and behind you
• Trend arrows (↓ closing in, ↑ pulling away, → holding steady)
• Your own distance completed and distance remaining
• A live "last updated" timestamp, so you always know how fresh the data is
• A clear offline warning if your connection or a competitor's GPS drops out
How it works
Race Proximity connects directly from your device to the public RaceMap API — no app, no account, no third-party server in between. Enter your race's RaceMap Event ID and your bib number in the field settings, and it does the rest, refreshing every 30 seconds throughout your activity. It only compares you to competitors sharing your own race status, so results stay relevant even mid-race as people finish, DNF, or move through waves.
Requirements
Your event must be tracked on RaceMap (racemap.com) with live GPS position mapping enabled by the organizer — this is what most public RaceMap-tracked races already use. If those two settings aren't filled in yet, the field tells you so instead of showing a blank screen.
What's new
- Simpler configuration: the "Event ID" field now accepts the full RaceMap player URL (the one you already see while following the race), in addition to the raw ID — no more manual lookup
- Clear message when a pasted link points to a multi-category event (e.g. a page combining several distances) instead of failing silently
- Bigger gap-ahead/gap-behind numbers for easier reading while riding
- Improved network reliability: the field no longer gets stuck on "Waiting…" forever if a request never gets a response (phone disconnected, etc.) — it now retries and shows an offline state
- Clear "Configuration required" screen on first launch, instead of a blank display
- Available in French and English
- New icon
