About

GlideSpace warns a sailplane pilot before they reach controlled or restricted airspace. It answers one question: how close am I, sideways and vertically, to the airspace I must not enter? WHAT IT SHOWS The airspace closest to being entered, named, with how far you are from its edge and how far below its floor or above its ceiling. Under the name is a side-on picture of it: your sailplane holds its place and the airspace moves around you. The block sits above you when you are beneath a floor, below you when you are over a ceiling, and closes around you when you are inside. It is drawn the way you are flying, so airspace off your left wing is drawn on your left and one look tells you which way to turn. Yellow warns, red means you are in it. UP or DOWN — or a swipe up or down, on a watch with a touchscreen — swaps the picture for the detail in text: the airspace's full name, its type, the published band it occupies, how far out you are and how far below or above. It returns to the warning by itself after five seconds. WHEN IT WARNS You set the distance and the height that count as close, and both are what the picture is scaled to. A warning is a coloured banner naming the airspace, a vibration and a tone; you can turn the app down to vibration only, or to the tone only, and the banner always stays. Heights are worked the way airspace is published: flight levels against the standard 1013 datum from the barometer, feet or metres above sea level against your QNH. Set the QNH by hand, take standard, calibrate it to a field elevation, or leave it to GPS. ONE AIRSPACE AT A TIME START on a live warning silences that airspace for five minutes or for the rest of the day, and it stays on screen while it is quiet. A danger area that is cold for weeks can be removed outright instead: it stops warning until you put it back from Settings, and the list of what you have removed is one screen away so nothing stays hidden by accident. YOUR AIRSPACE, NOT OURS The app ships with no airspace at all, deliberately: a file baked into a watch app is one country's, and it goes stale. Upload your own Naviter SeeYou .cub at up.cubio.no, choose the region you fly, get a five-character code and type it in once. The watch pulls it and keeps it. How much fits depends on the watch, and the app tells you if it had to stop early. Until you sync, it has nothing to warn about, and says so. WHAT IT NEEDS A GPS fix, a barometric altimeter, and a phone running Garmin Connect for the airspace sync — a one-off. Once the airspace is on the watch it flies with no phone and no signal. SUPPORT Manual and contact: https://shop.cubio.no/p/glidespace.html, [email protected] WHAT IT IS NOT Not a chart, not a clearance, and not a substitute for your own preparation. It warns on every airspace in your file whether or not it is active today, because a watch cannot read a NOTAM — expect warnings on cold danger areas. Where a floor is published above ground level it cannot be worked out without terrain the watch does not have, so the app warns early rather than guessing. Boundaries are simplified to fit, so treat the edge as approximate and the margin as the thing to watch. Brief the airspace on the ground; this tells you when one is close, not whether you may enter it. FOR SAILPLANES ONLY GlideSpace is built for sailplane soaring and nothing else. It is not intended for paragliding, hang gliding, speed flying, ultralight or microlight flying, wingsuits, skydiving or BASE jumping. The alert distances, the altitude datums and every setting assume a sailplane. WARNING: The app is intended only as an in-flight aid and should not be used as a primary information source. If the app contains a barometric altimeter, it will not function in a pressurized aircraft and should not be used in a pressurized aircraft.
