MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task)
· v2.14.12
About
This datafield displays the metabolic equivalent of an activity, which is the calorie burn rate in units of kcal/kg/h. One MET is 1 kcal/kg/h which is approximately the calorie burn rate at rest.
For more information on MET, see https://metscalculator.com/
Although VO2max measurement is more desirable for measuring cardiovascular fitness, Garmin watches only provide this for running and cycling. For people that do neither of these activities, METs is an alternative way to gauge cardiovascular fitness.
You should be capable of exercise at a level of at least 5 METs for an independent lifestyle and a higher survival rate. Higher than 8 METs is more desirable because at 8 METs risk factor for death from major causes is reduced in half compared to at 5 METs. See https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa011858
The maximum METs recording feature is useful for this purpose.
# Features
* Display real-time measurement, average over the entire activity duration (indicated as Avg. MET), or current lap average MET (indicated as Lap MET)
* Selectable to calculate using 1 MET=1 kcal/kg/h as a basis, or as a multiple of your estimated personal basal metabolic rate (indicated as METp). Your personal basal metabolic rate is your daily Resting Calories (visible in the Garmin Connect app) divided by the number of minutes in a day. (This latter selection requires your birth date, weight, height and gender to be entered in your Garmin user profile settings.)
# Full Version Features
* Saves MET data to FIT file for graph display in the Garmin Connect app
* Saves max & average MET over the activity duration and total MET·hr expended to the FIT file for display in the Garmin Connect app activity summary
* Saves Lap MET values to the FIT file for display in the Garmin Connect app lap data
* Saves 14 day maximum MET to the FIT file for display in the Garmin Connect app activity summary
* Saves today's MET·hr (from all activities) to the FIT file for display in the Garmin Connect app activity summary (available on Garmin watches only)
* Saves previous 7 days MET·hr (from all activities) to the FIT file for display in the Garmin Connect app activity summary. This gives you an indication of your normalized weekly activity level, also reflecting your energy expenditure. Normalized means the value is comparable to others of different height, weight, age, gender. (available on Garmin watches only)
* Determines heart rate recovery at the end of the activity and saves this for viewing in Garmin Connect. To use this, enable the option to measure HR recovery in the settings before starting your activity. Press STOP as usual at the end of your exercise. Rest. At the end of the 2 minutes, the watch will vibrate, indicating that the heart rate recovery has been measured. Now save the activity. View the results in Garmin Connect. For example, a heart rate recovery value of 25 means that your heart rate dropped 25bpm after 2 minutes. This value should increase as your fitness level improves.
* Added ability to save ruck weight (for rucking) to the FIT file for viewing with the activity summary in the Garmin Connect app, .

What's new
Please note that it appears the latest version of Garmin Connect mobile is rounding off values displayed in the activity summary. The avg METs, METhr and max MET values should be shown with 1 or 2 decimal points but they all show as integers now. I have notified Garmin of this problem and they have acknowledged it. To see the full precision values, use the Garmin Connect web portal.
