Banh Chung and Banh Giay

There once a legend in the Hung Dynasty in Vietnam, where a king decided to have his 18 sons introduce the most delicious dish in order to become the next ruler of the country. Many presented exotic and lavish dishes, but the youngest son who was also the poorest showed two different rice dishes. Banh Chung, a green and square cake symbolizing the earth, and Banh Giay, a white and round cake symbolizing the sky. The King was intrigued by the thoughtful meaning behind the dish, and decided to declare his youngest son as the winner. Since then, Banh Chung and Banh Giay have become the staple food during the Vietnamese Lunar New Year.
