About
How many steps did you take in this lap? Garmin's built-in fields show distance, pace, and time per lap — but not steps. Lap Steps does exactly that.
Add it as a data field to any activity profile that uses laps (running, interval workouts, track repeats, hike with Auto Lap on distance, walking intervals — anything where you care about per-lap effort in step terms). The field starts at 0 when you press Start and counts up while the timer is running. The moment a new lap begins — whether you pressed the lap button or Auto Lap fired (distance, time, position, HR zone, workout step, anything Garmin counts as a lap) — the field snaps back to 0 and counts your new lap from there.
What it does:
- Displays the steps you have taken in the current lap.
- Resets to 0 on every lap event: manual lap button presses, Auto Lap (by distance, time, position, or HR), workout step transitions, session-end laps.
- Freezes during pause (manual or Auto Pause) and during stop.
- Resumes from the frozen value when you press Start again.
- Returns to 0 when you discard or reset the activity.
- Re-baselines silently at midnight if the activity crosses local midnight.
- Records the per-lap step count into the FIT file as a custom lap field named "Lap Steps". Every lap row in the saved activity carries its own step total, so when you review the activity in Garmin Connect you can compare steps across laps the same way you compare distance and time. (View these in the Garmin Connect mobile app — Connect's web view currently has trouble rendering custom per-lap fields.)
What it does not do:
- It does not show a running total for the whole activity. For that, install our companion app Activity Steps.
- It does not distinguish manual lap presses from Auto Lap — both reset the count.
Want a cumulative total for the whole activity? Install Activity Steps.
What's new
New in this release: your per-lap step counts now appear in Garmin Connect. The per-lap totals were already being recorded into the saved activity, but the display information Connect needs was missing, so they stayed hidden — each lap now carries its own step total alongside distance and time. Nothing about the on-watch counter has changed.
Previous release: support for a lot more watches — including the Forerunner 70, the fēnix 8 and Instinct 3 lines, Venu 4, epix Pro (Gen 2), Enduro, and the Approach, D2, MARQ, and Descent families.
Note: the FIT field relies on being added to one of your activity data screens BEFORE you press Start. If you add the field to a screen partway through a recording, the on-screen counter still works but the FIT entry is not written for that activity.
-----------------------------------------------
Previous release: the per-lap step count is now recorded into the activity's FIT file as a custom lap field named "Lap Steps". Every lap row in the saved activity carries its own step total, so when you review the activity in Garmin Connect you can compare steps across laps the same way you compare distance and time.
This release adds the FitContributor permission to enable that custom field — Lap Steps still does not use network, location, or any sensor beyond the system step counter.
Heads-up: because the permission set has changed, the Connect IQ Store will prompt you to re-accept permissions when the update arrives. If you dismiss the prompt without accepting, your watch will stay on the previous version and the per-lap FIT field will not appear in your saved activities — re-open Connect IQ Mobile and accept the prompt to receive the update.
Note: the new field also relies on being added to one of your activity data screens BEFORE you press Start. If you add the field to a screen partway through a recording, the on-screen counter still works but the new FIT entry is not written for that activity.
