GlideRange is a cross-country aid for sailplanes. It answers one question: if I don't get home from here, where can I land? WHAT IT SHOWS Your landing options, nearest first, each with the glide it actually takes to reach it. Distance and bearing, and beside them the L/D required — 22:1 to that field, 8:1 to the one behind it — worked from where you are now and how high. A green badge means it is inside the glide of the sailplane you set up, red means it is not — one look sorts the list into what you can still reach and what you cannot. START opens a field: the direction as an arrow in your own frame, distance, its elevation, and the required glide tracking live as you fly. The list follows your course. What you see is the fields roughly ahead of your track, because a field behind you costs a turn and the height to make it. When there is no usable heading, or you are too slow for a course to mean anything, it falls back to nearest-in-any-direction and says so. You can widen the cone, or switch the list to airports only. SET IT TO YOUR SAILPLANE AND YOUR DAY Best L/D and best-glide speed for your sailplane. Wind direction and strength, which you set: the required glide is computed into that wind, so a leg into it reads honestly instead of optimistically. A safety altitude, up to 1000 m, held back from every arrival so the figure gets you to circuit height rather than to the fence. Distance, climb, elevation and speeds each take their own unit. THE OTHER PAGES A vario for the field you have selected: barometric, immediate climb above the reachability band and the 20-second average below it, with a Fast, Medium or Slow response. An altimeter with a QNH subscale — set it directly, set standard 1013, calibrate it to a known field elevation, or leave it to GPS. And a flight recorder that starts itself when you accelerate away, stops after you land, and saves the flight to Garmin Connect with no button to remember. YOUR FIELDS, NOT OURS The app ships with no field data at all, and that is deliberate: a list baked into a watch app is one country's list, and it goes stale. You upload your own outlanding and airport list — a SeeYou .cup file or a CSV — at up.cubio.no, get a five-character code, and type it in once under Setup. The watch pulls it and keeps it. How much fits depends on the watch: 1150 sites on the oldest supported models, 3000 on the newest; if your list is longer the app tells you what it kept. Until you sync, the app has nothing to show, and says so. WHAT IT NEEDS A GPS fix, because the answer depends on where you are. A barometric altimeter, which every supported watch has. A phone running Garmin Connect for the field sync — a one-off; once your list is on the watch the app flies with no phone and no signal. It knows the still-air glide of the sailplane you told it about, into the wind you told it about. It does not know the sink between here and there, the terrain in the way, or whether a field is soft, fenced, cropped or full of stock — it holds a name, a position and an elevation, nothing more. A field shown green is a field to look at, not a field to commit to. Pick your option early, get eyes on it, and fly the circuit you would fly anyway. FOR SAILPLANES ONLY GlideRange is built for sailplane soaring and nothing else. It is not intended for paragliding, hang gliding, speed flying, ultralight or microlight flying, wingsuits, skydiving or BASE jumping. The glide model, the field data and every setting assume a sailplane. WARNING: The app is intended only as an in-flight aid and should not be used as a primary information source. If the app contains a barometric altimeter, it will not function in a pressurized aircraft and should not be used in a pressurized aircraft.
