About
A tribute to Victor Vasarely (1906-1997), the father of op art, and to his spheres: a grid of squares that curvature makes swell and recede toward the edges, until the eye reads volume where there is nothing but flat colour.
The whole face is drawn as vectors, not as an image. The spherical distortion is computed rather than traced: the cells curve, the ovals flatten toward the limb, and every coloured square is a square seen in perspective, sitting inside its oval.
The detail I am happiest with: the digits are in perspective too. The steps and the date are not laid flat on top of the artwork — they are drawn in the plane of their own square, and recede along with it. The step digits recede to the right, the date digits toward the bottom. Each character shrinks and tightens exactly as an object lying on the sphere would.
Display
Centre — the time, as an analog clock, tick marks sitting on the square itself
Top — the seconds, a wedge sweeping its square second by second
Right — today's step count, in perspective
Bottom — the date (day / month), in perspective
Left — the battery: the gauge fills the square, turning orange below 50% and red below 25%
Settings
Background — colour A and colour B, 8 shades — the whole checkerboard recolours
Hands — colour of the hands, the tick marks, the seconds wedge, the battery
Data — colour and size (1 to 5) of the steps and the date
