GlidePanel

GlidePanel is a combined in-flight aid for sailplanes. It brings wind, reachable landing fields, airspace, live traffic and flight recording onto one Garmin watch, so you do not have to choose between separate watch apps before takeoff. WHAT IT SHOWS Six pages sit one button apart: Panel, Wind, Traffic, Fields, Field, Airspace and Flight. A rim around the screen always carries north, the wind and an arrow to your selected field, so the watch keeps the same spatial frame while the page changes. The Panel page shows the four live subjects together: wind, nearest traffic, selected field and nearest airspace boundary. Green means the glide reaches the field; red means it does not. The Field and Wind pages show required L/D and whether it has improved or worsened over the last 30 seconds. Fields are ranked by the glide they need from your current position and calibrated height, corrected for wind and your sailplane's best L/D. Open one field and the watch shows direction, distance, arrival height and the required glide tracking live as you fly. Airspace warnings are lateral and vertical. Flight levels are compared on standard 1013, while MSL limits use your QNH. The airspace page shows the nearest relevant boundary and can alert with tone, vibration or both. Traffic is a self-zooming plan view streamed live through your phone. OGN (FLARM) is the default source. If PureTrack Pro subscription, PureTrack can be selected as an optional traffic source. You can also transmit your own position to PureTrack; that is separate from the traffic source, off by default at every launch, and does not need a PureTrack account. SET IT TO YOUR SAILPLANE AND YOUR DAY At startup GlidePanel asks for your altitude, so the session is calibrated to a height you stated rather than a GPS figure wandering by tens of metres. Wind is measured from your flying. Best L/D, best-glide speed, arrival-height margin, airspace thresholds, alert style and units are adjustable on the watch. YOUR FIELDS AND AIRSPACE, NOT OURS The app ships with no landing-field or airspace database. That is deliberate: a baked-in list is one country's list, and it goes stale. You upload your own SeeYou .cup landing fields and Naviter .cub airspace with the free Cubio uploaders. The watch pulls the data through Garmin Connect and keeps it on the device. WHAT IT NEEDS A GPS fix, because every distance, bearing and traffic position depends on where you are. Garmin Connect and an internet connection on your phone are needed for data sync, and also throughout the flight for live traffic. A barometer improves altitude and enables automatic flight detection and FIT recording; on supported watches without one, the app can still run but the Flight page says there is no flight clock. Buy and install it from the Connect IQ Store on your phone. There is no PC, no cable, no code to enter and no Cubio account. WHAT IT IS NOT GlidePanel is a recreational aid, not a final-glide computer, not an airspace-clearance source and not a collision-avoidance system. It shows only the fields and airspace you loaded. OGN coverage is incomplete, positions can be delayed, and many aircraft do not transmit at all. A green field is a field to assess, not a field to commit to; a quiet traffic page is not an empty sky. Keep a visual lookout, use current charts and briefings, and keep your panel instruments and judgement primary. GlidePanel is built for sailplane soaring and nothing else. It is not intended for paragliding, hang gliding, speed flying, ultralight or microlight flying, wingsuits, skydiving or BASE jumping.
