About
A dress watch face with a pointer date. Gold on true black.
THE DATE HAS A HAND, NOT A WINDOW
Every watch face cuts a window and prints a number in it. This one gives the
date its own small hand, sweeping a scale of one to thirty one on a counter at
three o'clock. It is how fine watches showed the date before the window was
invented, and it is the reason this dial does not look like the others.
The scale carries thirty one marks whatever the month, the way a mechanical
train does: the wheel that drives it has no idea how long February is. The dial
does not cheat by tightening its scale.
DRAWN THE WAY A DIAL IS FINISHED
Radial guilloche, a hundred and eighty engraved rays that give the ground its
material. A flat black face has none
Twelve applied indices, faceted: one half lit, one half in shadow
The name printed under the twelve index, in a fine roman, letter spaced by hand
Alpha hands, a slim shaft opening into a lozenge then closing to the point
The dial is drawn as geometry, not assembled from images. Only the numerals and
the name come from a font. It stays sharp on every screen from 360 to 454
pixels, and nothing is upscaled.
SIX FINISHES
Black and gold, black and rose gold, black and steel, midnight blue, opaline,
ivory. Four dark, two pale.
TRUE BLACK, AND AN ALWAYS ON THAT BEHAVES
On an AMOLED screen, true black means pixels physically switched off. The
default finish lights three percent of them. In always on mode the whole dial
gives way to four quarter marks and two thin hands, lighting barely one pixel in
a hundred against the ten that Garmin allows, and the whole shifts a few pixels
every minute to protect the display from burn in.
ASKS NOTHING OF YOUR WATCH
No permissions. No sensors read. No phone connection required. It reads the
clock and the date, and nothing else.
MAKE IT YOURS
The guilloche, the pointer date and the name on the dial all switch off
independently.
TELL ME WHAT YOU WOULD CHANGE
I read every review and I reply. If something bothers you, a colour, a
proportion, an option you wish existed, say so and I will look at it.
