THE MOON IS COMPUTED, NOT GUESSED Most moon phase faces run on a fixed 29.5-day cycle. The moon does not: its orbit is an ellipse, and the phase runs ahead of the average, then behind it. This face carries the correction terms. Checked against ten real eclipses between 2017 and 2025 — a solar eclipse can only happen at new moon, a lunar eclipse only at full moon — it lands within twenty minutes every time. The terminator is drawn as a half ellipse, which is the shape a shadow actually takes on a sphere lit from the side. Not a black disc sliding across a circle. Southern hemisphere? One setting mirrors the crescent, so it matches the moon you actually see. Swiss watches never bothered. DRAWN THE WAY A DIAL IS FINISHED • Sunburst guilloche — a hundred and forty-four engraved rays that give the dial its material. A flat black face has none • Applied indices, faceted: one half lit, one half in shadow, split by a dark edge, the way polished metal is cut • Roman numerals at the quarters • Faceted leaf hands • A minute track with no rings, so nothing competes with the engraving The dial is drawn as geometry, not assembled from images — only the Roman numerals come from a font, and it weighs sixty-eight pixels by forty-five. The face stays sharp on every screen from 360 to 454 pixels. Nothing is upscaled. SIX FINISHES Gold, silver, salmon, steel blue, emerald, copper.
