About

NOTE: If you contact me through the Contact Developer link and expect a reply please provide an email address. Hiker is designed for walking, hiking or scrambling outdoors. The app captures the hike data using the standard Garmin activities which can be uploaded via Garmin Connect. The activity is classed as a hike. There is one main screen showing clock, timer, and four customisable data fields; distance, steps, ascent, current heading, heart rate, altitude and pace. If a compass is present in the watch then the heading will display the current heading, otherwise it will display the direction of travel from the GPS trace. Following this there are a number of graph screens logging elevation, pressure, temperature (Using the Garmin Tempe temperature sensor) and heart rate. These screens give a history over the last 4 hours. The heart rate and elevation graphs are updated every 2 minutes and the pressure and temperature graphs are updated every 4 minutes. Various statistics are shown below each graph. The last screen displays a trail as representation of the path walked. A data point is logged every 2 minutes when there's a good GPS signal. The start is represented by a green square and the current position is a red cross. Below the trail is the last known good position in degrees, minutes and seconds. On starting the app it will wait for a good GPS signal which can be bypassed. Use left and right swipes or the up and down buttons to move through the screens. Activities can be paused using the start/stop button. If you forget to resume the activity after a number of steps you will be asked if you wish to resume the hike. DISCLAIMER: While Hiker provides a number of navigation aids, these should not be used as your primary source of navigation. I cannot be held responsible for incorrect readings that affect your navigation during your hike. I hope you enjoy using Hiker but please use it at your own risk.

What's new

[Version 1.27 - 11 November 2017] UPDATED: Rebuilt on latest SDK [Version 1.26 - 29 April 2017] NEW: A menu has been added to the exit routine. This should provide a quicker way to save and close your hike. NEW: A new bearing data field has been added. This complements the existing heading data field. NEW: Support has been added for watches with the internal temperature sensor. If you don't own the Garmin Tempe external temperature sensor then temperature readings will now switch to using the internal sensor. REMOVED: The pressure graph has been removed to allow new features to be added and improve the stability for the older watches. [Version 1.24 - 8 April 2017] BUG: Had to workaround a firmware issue with the FR230 and FR235 watches. The menu and up button functions were operating at the same time. [Version 1.22 - 8 April 2017] NEW: Added a new button lock feature. Selecting the menu will lock the start/stop and back buttons. Press the menu again to unlock them. On the Forerunner and fenix 3 watches the menu is accessed by holding down the up button. On the Vivoactive HR hold the right button. NEW: Updated the alert icons. There are new icons for save and discard. REMOVED: Unfortunately I have had to remove support for the fenix Chronos. Due to the memory limits I'm hitting with the older watches I cannot accommodate the new software update which uses the fenix 5S software. I will be releasing a new application focused on the new watches soon. [Version 1.20 - 28 November 2016] NEW: Added direction arrow in the trail view. The red arrow points to the direction you are facing relative to north on the map. This allows you to orient yourself to face your starting position (Green square) and head in that direction. The new scale will give you an approximate straight line distance. NEW: Added a scale to the trail view. This appears after the extent of the trail exceeds either 1 mile or km. As you walk further the scale and units will adjust to fit the trail. [Version 1.19 - 31 October 2016] NEW: Added temperature data field. [Version 1.18 - 25 September 2016] NEW: Added support for the Fenix Chronos. NEW: Optimised code to reduce memory usage. FEEDBACK: I've had some comments about the ascent and descent figures and whether they're correct in the app as the figures change when uploaded to Garmin Connect. I believe the app is working correctly but if you're watch doesn't have a barometer then you're purely relying on a 3D GPS position for the elevation gain. This isn't the most accurate measurement. Therefore Garmin corrects your activity and matches the elevation to the terrain map of what you have just walked. This is why the app figures change when uploaded to Garmin Connect. The figures do match when the watch contains a barometer as no correction is applied in Garmin Connect. [Version 1.16] FIXED: Icon was missing. [Version 1.15] NEW: Added French as a supported language. NEW: Moved the actual value on the graphs to the top of the metrics. FIXED: Corrected some German translations. [Version 1.13] NEW: Added pace to the available data fields. This either displays as minutes and seconds per km or per mile depending upon your pace setting. FIXED: Ascent and altitude data fields had a bug where they displayed the value as feet even though elevation units were set as meters.
