GlideWatch

GlideWatch shows the aircraft around you on a plan view: gliders, tow planes and powered traffic reported by the Open Glider Network and by ADS-B, merged into one feed with duplicate reports of the same aircraft collapsed into a single mark. THE PICTURE Every aircraft is drawn at its own bearing and range out to a 20 km horizon, heading-up, so straight ahead is always the top of the screen. A brim of clock ticks carries a red north mark that rotates with the world and a fixed mark at twelve o'clock, so a bearing can be read off the face the way a pilot says it out loud. Range rings and a scale sit under the marks, and the plan zooms itself to the nearest aircraft. COLOUR IS VERTICAL SEPARATION Red when another aircraft is within 100 m of your height, amber within 300 m, green beyond. Both thresholds are yours to set. An aircraft whose height is unknown is drawn in the face's own ink rather than green, because green is a claim of separation it has not earned. NAMED, NOT NUMBERED Each target carries its registration, and a glider's competition number where it is published, rather than a bare hex id. Airline and GA traffic is resolved too. Each mark's label rolls through the height difference, the other aircraft's climb rate, its registration and its range. IN FLIGHT It follows the nearest aircraft by itself; UP/DOWN browse the rest and START locks onto one, ringing it and running a coloured wedge out to it. It buzzes and beeps the moment new traffic appears, so you look up without watching the watch. A proximity alarm sounds when something is inside both the alert band and the alert distance. Hold START to mute your own transmitter — a panel FLARM or phone app that reports from your own cockpit — and BACK undoes it. Your own altitude is calibrated once per run so the separations are measured from a stated height rather than a raw GPS figure; it can be set again at any time from Setup. Parked and taxiing aircraft are filtered out. Distances in km, NM or miles; heights in metres or feet; light and dark themes. THE FEED OGN and ADS-B arrive together by default and work for everyone. If you hold a PureTrack Pro subscription you can switch the traffic source to PureTrack in the menu and pair it once with your login; the default feed is always there to switch back to. You can also transmit your own position to PureTrack, which is separate from the source you read, off at every launch, and needs no subscription. REQUIREMENTS A phone running Garmin Connect with a working internet connection, kept connected for the whole flight. GlideWatch streams live traffic over that connection and does not run offline. Coverage depends on OGN ground-station and ADS-B reception where you fly. SAFETY A traffic-awareness aid, not a collision-avoidance system. Coverage is incomplete, positions can be delayed, and many aircraft do not transmit at all. Never rely on it for separation: keep a visual lookout and follow see-and-avoid at all times.
