GlideWatch
· v1.1.5a
About
GlideWatch is a traffic display for sailplane pilots. FLARM equipped sailplanes, tow planes and powered traffic reported by the Open Glider Network or PureTrack, nearest first: how far, which way, how high, and who. It is also a tracker for PureTrack: it can put you on the map.
WHAT IT SHOWS
One aircraft at a time, by default the nearest. Under it: its clock or compass bearing, its altitude, and a short line of type and climb rate. It re-sorts every few seconds and follows the live nearest target. UP and DOWN browse the rest; START follows one, BACK releases.
The largest text on the screen is the identity: a registration where a source knows one, with a sailplane's competition number beside it when published — LN-GXY, or D-1234 (7L). Sailplanes come from the OGN device database, airliners and GA from public registries. It is best effort: an owner who has asked not to be identified is never named, and an unknown aircraft keeps its hex code.
A red triangle rotates each target's ground track into your own frame: your heading is up, the arrow points where the other aircraft is going. An altitude ladder reads the target against your own level rather than sea level, its needle red within one rung of your height, yellow at one to three, green beyond.
KEEPING THE SCREEN TO WHAT MATTERS
A vertical band, set in 100 m or 300 ft steps, drops traffic far above or below you. Parked and taxiing aircraft are filtered out, so a busy airfield does not fill the list. SmartRange sizes the search radius to the sky you are in: tight when busy, out to your set range when empty. Your own trackers — a FLARM or a phone app in your cockpit — are muted with a hold of START.
The watch beeps and buzzes when traffic first appears in an empty sky, and again when something comes inside your alarm distance and band, so you look up without watching the watch.
WHERE THE TRAFFIC COMES FROM
The Open Glider Network by default: free, and no account of yours. Switching the source to PureTrack is optional, and is the one part of GlideWatch that needs a subscription of your own: an active PureTrack Pro. It carries the OGN traffic and adds all ADS-B on top, plus other trackers. Pair it once with your PureTrack login; OGN is always there to switch back to.
BEING SEEN, NOT ONLY SEEING
Set your aircraft up on the watch, choose it from the picker at launch, and your position is sent to PureTrack so other pilots and your ground crew can follow you. This needs no PureTrack account or subscription — that is only for the traffic source — so you can be seen while reading OGN. A registration is optional: without one you appear as an anonymous marker. It is off by default at every launch, can be switched on or off at any time including in flight, and says what it publishes first.
WHAT IT NEEDS
A phone running Garmin Connect, online, for the whole flight. This is not an offline app: the traffic comes from a live service the watch polls every few seconds. Out of coverage the screen says so. It also needs a GPS fix: the answer depends on where you are.
SUPPORT
Manual and contact: https://shop.cubio.no/p/glidewatch.html, [email protected]
WHAT IT IS NOT
A traffic-awareness aid, not a collision-avoidance system, and not FLARM. Coverage is incomplete, positions can be delayed, and many aircraft do not transmit at all, so an empty screen does not mean an empty sky. Never use it for separation. Keep a visual lookout and follow see-and-avoid at all times.
FOR SAILPLANES ONLY
GlideWatch is built for sailplane soaring and nothing else. It is not intended for paragliding, hang gliding, speed flying, ultralight or microlight flying, wingsuits, skydiving or BASE jumping.
WARNING: The app is intended only as an in-flight aid and should not be used as a primary information source. If the app contains a barometric altimeter, it will not function in a pressurized aircraft and should not be used in a pressurized aircraft.
