About

Questions, issues, requests all welcome - they are what make things better - I do this for fun and share hoping it is useful. Please use the 'Contact Developer' (with an email if you expect a reply) option to contact me with problems or suggestions. If you like this widget, then please leave a review. View tide and related data on a single screen - young eyes or glasses required! This app cannot be relied on for navigation or other critical activity. A coastal location must be entered in the settings, for example 'Miami', 'Nice' or "Kinghorn" etc. Optionally latitude and longitude may be entered using Decimal Degrees (DD) format - leave these as 0 to use the named location. The tidal data is updated following a location setting change (if the Tides widget is open) and subsequently every hour by web calls via an internet connected phone. Ensure the coastal location is on the sea coast, not a large city or estuary a bit inland for example. ⭐It is recommended to update the location using the phone Connect IQ app while the Tides widget is open on your watch as the update will then be made immediately. Otherwise an hourly background synchronisation will be made requiring internet connected phone when this update is made. 1] Start the tides app on watch 2] Start the settings on connected phone with web access 3] Set the lat/long to 0 4] Set a test location - Miami 5] Check this loads on the watch - if not see the bottom dot color 6] Change to a location of your choice. The status of the last synchronisation is indicated by a small colored dot at the bottom of the screen. The possible colors are: • None – no location set in settings or no update attempt yet made (initial full screen warning) • Green – data successfully updated with last update • Yellow – no valid data with last update (usually bad location set) • Red – Response failure for last update (usually no phone internet connection) The options are controlled by buttons: • Start button – toggle the number of days displayed (1 to 7) • Up – move display time forward by one hour • Down – cycle through display variables • Menu (Up hold) – options menu where number of display variables, first screen display mode, units and toggle previously set locations can be set • Back - exit On touch watches some actions mimic the button commands. The vertical red line is the current time and the yellow line is the display time for direction information shown on upper 3 dials (wind, wave and sea current). All times are in the local time zone for the tides. The data is obtained from geocode.maps.co, German Weather Service DWD and open-meteo.com. The tide (sea level) data is computed using global numerical models, interpolated to coastal locations. I have found the accuracy to be reasonable for casual use in most locations, but there have been some locations where the coastal results are poor. This method is global and free, but may not be as accurate as specific tide data tables (which are not free or global). Therefore, this is not suitable for coastal navigation and does not replace nautical almanac tables.

What's new

1.10.0 • Bug with time zone (negative offset w.r.t UTC) corrected. 1.9.0 • Extra location data and status (Info) screen added. Select down from the first screen. 1.8.1 • Some watches with reduced web access memory fail to download the data (e.g. Fenix 6). This has been handled by reducing the data downloaded when low memory is detected (2 days only without the temperature data) • Handle partial data download, seen in one specific location 1.7.0 • Spanish localisation added 1.6.0 • Glance feature added, high tide displayed only for devices with 64kB+ Glance memory • New devices added 1.5.2 • Option to set update frequency • Watch setting to remove current location from previous locations list 1.4.3 • Option to show next high and low tides with height on first screen (smaller font required) • Touch hold to toggle first screen mode 1.3.3 • Previous locations can be toggled from watch settings • Internal stored data can be completely reset from phone settings (similar to re-install) 1.2.6 • Initial summary screen to be more compatible with some watches • Checks for data when widget starts if none already present • Fix for partially corrupt data from some locations 1.1.6 • Updates tidal data directly when settings location set or changed • Display options saved between application starts • Change to key control with added menu (number of display variables set there) • Imperial/metric units setting added 1.0.3 Initial release • Handling devices that auto move between glances with Up/Down keys • Some peculiarities seen on fr945 device
