Di2 Field — Edge Explore 2

Di2 Field puts your current Di2 rear gear (e.g. 5•12) and the wireless unit battery level on your Edge data screen. It connects over Bluetooth Low Energy — no ANT+ needed. There is no button to press: add the field to a data screen, tap any shifter to wake the Di2, and the field finds it and connects on its own. It then sticks to that unit and reconnects automatically on every ride. A colour-coded dot shows the state: blue searching, yellow connecting, green connected, dark blue locked onto your Di2, orange retrying. WHAT IT SHOWS - Rear gear as large numbers, a cassette graphic, or both - Front chainring indicator for 2x/3x - Di2 battery as a percentage, a colour-coded icon, or both - Day / night theme, six languages (EN, FR, ES, RU, DE, AR) SETTING UP YOUR DRIVETRAIN Pick a built-in Shimano preset for your chainrings and cassette (e.g. 50-34, 11-34, 10-51), or choose Custom and enter the teeth by hand. RECORDS TO YOUR ACTIVITY Per-second gear, teeth, ratio and battery, plus a ride summary: highest rear gear, maximum ratio, lowest battery and shift counts. Visible in the Connect IQ section of the activity. SWITCHING BIKES Turn on "Forget paired Di2" in the field settings — the field drops the current unit and locks onto the nearest awake Di2 on the next scan. TESTED SETUP Built and tested on my own bike: Shimano XT Di2 RD-M8250-SGS (12-speed) with a Garmin Edge Explore 2. Other Di2 series that broadcast the same Bluetooth data should work too, but I cannot verify them myself. IF SOMETHING DOESN'T WORK Turn on "Diagnostics overlay" in the field settings. The field then shows a technical screen instead of the normal layout — connection state, the detected model and the raw data from your Di2. Send me a photo of that screen and I can tell what is happening on your setup, and often add support for it. Known issue: on Edge Explore 2 firmware 31.33 the device itself refuses to register the Bluetooth service the Di2 uses, so no third-party app can read gears (the battery still works). Reported to Garmin and acknowledged (CIQQA-4662), waiting for a firmware fix. Firmware 30.23 is unaffected. Independent, unofficial app — not affiliated with or endorsed by Shimano.

v.0.50 - Fixed: on recent Edge firmware the field could fail to start and show the Connect IQ error icon instead of your data. It created more FIT fields than the device allows; the set now fits, and if a device still refuses it, the field keeps working without FIT recording instead of crashing. - Fixed: gears could stay empty while the connection looked healthy — the notification subscription is now retried until the device confirms it, and reconnects also run before you start the activity timer. - Fixed: values coming from the shifter are range-checked, so a stray packet can no longer show an impossible gear. The number of rear sprockets is taken from the shifter itself when it reports it. - Changed: the ride summary in the FIT file is smaller — average ratio, the most-used combo and the top sprockets are no longer recorded. Per-second gears, teeth, ratio and battery are unchanged. Firmware 30.23 is unaffected. v.0.34 Faster setup and broader Di2 support. - Drivetrain presets: pick a common Shimano chainring or cassette setup (e.g. 50-34, 11-34, 10-51) instead of typing every tooth count. While a preset is selected it sets your gearing; choose Custom to enter values by hand. - Automatic Di2 model detection, with the groundwork to support more Di2 series beyond the tested XT M8250. - New full-screen diagnostics mode (a setting): shows connection state, signal, the detected model and the raw data — turn it on and send a photo if a connection issue comes up. v.0.28 New display options and a clearer readout. You can now show the rear gear as numbers, as a cassette graphic, or both: the graphic draws every sprocket as a bar — largest on the left, height following the cog sizes — with your current sprocket highlighted, so you can read your position at a glance. The battery can be shown as a percentage, a colour-coded battery icon, or both; the icon fills with the charge and turns orange below 40% and red below 15%. The battery icon and cassette graphic are now on by default, and the settings option labels are fully translated in all six languages. Plus faster, more efficient Bluetooth handling under the hood. v.0.24 More reliable connection. The field now keeps its Bluetooth bond between rides and reconnects to your Di2 on its own as soon as it's awake — no re-pairing after a short break. Sticky-lock is more dependable: it confirms it's really your unit before locking on, instead of jumping to another nearby Di2. While linking, a seconds counter shows progress, and after a long search the hint reminds you to hold the Di2 button (a Di2 left asleep for a long time stops broadcasting and must be re-paired — a Shimano limitation). v0.0.16 Smarter connection: the field now shows what it's doing while linking up (Searching / Connecting) and reminds you to wake the Di2. It pairs with your own Di2 and reconnects to it automatically; a new "Forget paired Di2" switch lets you move to another bike. Connection status is now a color-coded dot (blue searching, yellow connecting, green connected, dark blue your paired Di2, orange reconnecting), and its alignment is fixed across all layouts.
