BASALT - Retro LCD Field Watch

A digital watch face for transflective, always-on displays. Big segment digits, a strict grid, nothing that moves when you are not looking. Simple, tactical, military - the plain style of a field instrument, built for legibility rather than decoration. Every glyph is drawn by hand from segments, not a system font. That is what these panels render best: hard edges, no anti-aliasing. FONTS Four hand-drawn faces: LCD 7-segment, Block, Block v2 (wider digits, flagged one) and 5x7 dot matrix - plus the watch's own built-in System font, if you prefer the native look. Each data field can use its own font, and the seconds can use a different font than the time. FIELDS Four fields you can point at any of 22 data sources, or switch off entirely: top edge, above the time, the date row, and the sub-dial or bottom row. Sources: weather and temperature, notifications, battery percent, battery days, steps, heart rate, Body Battery, recovery time, stress, calories, distance, floors, sunrise and sunset, chance of rain, wind speed, forecast high and low, altitude, pressure, UTC time with offset, solar intensity, day of month, day of year, ISO week, moon age. TIME 24h or 12h. Hide the seconds and the time re-centres. Turn the colon off and the digit positions stay put, the way an LCD electrode goes dark. Inverted mode fills a band across the screen and knocks the digits out of it. SIZE Five steps per element, from 75 to 125 percent. The whole glyph scales, so the proportions hold. DETAILS Faint unlit segments behind the digits, in five strengths, on colour displays. Hand-drawn weather icons: smooth bitmap images on the colour models, pixel art on Instinct 3 / E and the other 1-bit models. Optional lines above and below the time. White background mode. Alarm, Bluetooth and Do Not Disturb icons next to the date, each switchable. Per-field colour is available if you want it. Units follow the watch settings. Two notes: Garmin's form does not pass your address to me, so please include a way to reach you if you would like a reply, and please mention your BASALT version (the last line of the on-watch settings menu). If settings changed from the phone app do not show up on the watch, try changing them from the watch itself (hold MENU on the face, Watch Face, BASALT, Customize) or restart the watch once - both work around a phone-sync hiccup.

2.4.6 - Fixed (phone-app settings): saving from the Connect IQ / Garmin Connect app could send the face back to its default look. The face relied on one internal value that the phone app never shows and, depending on the app build, may not write back to the watch; reading it right after a save could then fail. 2.4.6 removes that internal value and reads every setting defensively, so nothing the phone app leaves out can reset the face. Reported by an Instinct 3 user in China - thank you. - Note for the few users updating straight from 1.x, or whose settings never saved on 2.4.0-2.4.3: text sizes may show one step smaller than before. Pick the size once more in any Size setting and it stays. - If you report a problem via Contact Developer, please include your BASALT version (the last line of the on-watch settings menu) and a way to reach you - Garmin's form does not pass your address to the developer. Release history, in case you skipped versions (or an old bug drove you away - the fixes that matter are spelled out): 2.4.5 - Fixed: the Body Battery field flickered between the value and "--" (only the newest sample was read; empty slots are now skipped and the last good reading stays on screen). 2.4.4 - Fixed (Instinct 3 / E): settings could refuse to stick, and changing the font or a data field could crash the face. The code had grown to within a few hundred bytes of the 64 KB a watch face gets on these models; 2.4.4 frees about 1.8 KB by dropping the "Reset all settings" entry from the on-watch menu on those models (Instinct 2 never had it, and the phone app never had it). Every other setting, and the look of the face, is unchanged. If you were affected, please set your options once more after updating. 2.4.3 - Fixed: settings saved from the Garmin Connect / Connect IQ app on an Android phone could be ignored by the watch (the Android app sends numeric options as decimals; BASALT now accepts them). iPhone users were never affected. 2.4.2 - Block v2 drops the leading zero of a single-digit hour in 24h mode and re-centres. Weekday M / W use the same shape on every model. Round models: weather icon at temperature height, a little further from the text. 2.4.1 - New: support for the fenix 9 Pro Solar (47mm and 51mm). Nothing else changed. 2.4.0 - A full rework of the Time size setting. Fixed: Block v2 seconds drew 1 and 7 exactly alike; sizes barely stepped in Block v2; stroke weight drifted with size in every font (bolder small, thinner large - most visible on Instinct). System font sizes now map onto the fonts the watch actually ships, Dot on round models uses the Block v1 cells, and sizes that cannot render differently are hidden from the on-watch picker. Default looks untouched. 2.3.0 - Fixed: on Instinct 2 / 2S / 2X, settings changed from the Garmin Connect app could quietly revert to what they were before. The watch persists the face's settings when the face exits, and on these 64KB models that final write could run out of memory and silently fail; the settings data is now slim enough that it always fits. Also fixed: "Reset all settings" did nothing on Instinct 3 / E. New: colour option for the time lines; the on-watch menu shows the installed version on its last line. 2.2.1 - Fixed: the seconds could vanish on Instinct 3 and stay gone until the face was reloaded (a power-budget guard tripped once and never recovered). Weekday letters N / M / W redrawn. 2.2.0 - Fixed: on Instinct 3 / E the on-watch settings menu could crash, and settings could fail to survive a restart. Much lower battery drain from the seconds display.
