About
# Ice Hockey Tracker
Ice Hockey Tracker is a Garmin watch app for ice hockey sessions, especially indoor rinks where GPS is often weak or unavailable.
The app focuses on the metrics that are most useful for hockey players: shift time, ice time, bench time, heart rate, recovery, calories, workload, intensity trends, estimated skating distance, shots, stops, turns, and rough rink-zone usage.
Before starting, the player can choose GPS AUTO or GPS OFF. GPS AUTO uses GPS when it is available and usable. GPS OFF is designed for indoor hockey, where the app uses watch sensors instead of waiting for poor GPS.
## Key Features
- Start and stop hockey activity directly from the watch
- Garmin-like end menu with SAVE, DISCARD, and CANCEL
- GPS AUTO / GPS OFF start option
- Live shift timer
- Ice time and bench time
- Automatic bench calibration
- REST AWAY protection for penalty-box or off-bench rests
- Heart rate, average heart rate, and max heart rate
- Recovery metric based on heart-rate drop during bench rest
- Calories burned
- Workload score
- High-intensity time
- Estimated skating distance and speed
- GPS distance and GPS track when GPS quality is usable
- Track screen with GPS trail or sensor estimate
- Estimated heat map
- Estimated defensive / neutral / offensive zone time
- Shot count and shot power estimate
- Stops, turns, and hard accelerations
- Progress history for recent saved hockey sessions
- Responsive data fields for smaller and larger Garmin displays
## Progress Tracking
The app stores recent saved hockey sessions locally on the watch and shows progress trends for:
- Workload
- Ice time
- Calories
- Recovery
This helps players compare recent sessions and see whether their workload, time on ice, recovery, and overall intensity are improving.
## Accuracy Note
This app is built for hockey, where indoor GPS is often unavailable or unreliable. Distance, speed, shots, track, heat map, and rink-zone time are estimates unless GPS quality is usable.
Watch-sensor estimates can be affected by stick handling, shooting, arm movement, gliding, contact, and how tightly the watch is worn.
Heart rate, elapsed time, ice time, bench time, recovery, workload, and calories are generally the most useful metrics. Distance, zones, shots, track, and heat map should be treated as training estimates, not exact official statistics.
For best results, test and calibrate the app with real hockey sessions.
## Short Description
Indoor ice hockey tracker for shifts, heart rate, recovery, calories, workload, GPS/sensor estimates, and progress history.
What's new
# What's New - Version 1.00.020
- Reworked the in-activity screens into a cleaner Garmin-style layout.
- Reduced the active page set to 8 focused screens: live heart rate, time, speed, shots, rink, heat map, summary, and profile/settings.
- Replaced dense data grids with larger primary values and simple two-metric support rows.
- Removed older chart, timeline, GPS track, and progress screens that made the interface crowded on smaller watches.
- Reduced unused in-memory visual history while keeping heat map sampling active.
# What's New - Version 1.00.019
- Added Garmin Connect IQ app settings for default GPS, session type, player profile, and FIT export mode.
- Added a safe FIT export mode selector: Auto, Core fields, or Extended fields.
- Added Garmin Semicircles barrel support for faster GPS distance calculations with fallback to the previous calculation.
- Live screen now uses a cleaner Garmin-style metric row helper.
- Continued migration toward Garmin native UI patterns for menus, confirmations, and progress screens.
# What's New - Version 1.00.017
- Simplified the end activity menu for much better readability on small round screens.
- Shows only one selected end action at a time, Garmin-style.
- Removed overlapping helper text from save/discard confirmation screens.
- Cleaned the final saved/discarded screen so it displays only two clear text lines.
- Keeps the Garmin-style white activity screens and pre-start rotating status header from 1.00.016.
What's New - Version 1.00.016
- Redesigned activity screens to better match the clean Garmin-style white data layout.
- Added rotating pre-start status header with GPS mode, battery, player profile, and start prompt.
- Improved start indication with a short Garmin-like green play overlay.
- Updated save/discard flow with Garmin-style saving and activity saved confirmation screens.
- Refreshed Connect IQ store screenshots for the new white Garmin-inspired UI.
- Kept hockey-specific sensor estimates for distance, shots, zones, heat map, workload, calories, and recovery.
Note: distance, shots, zones, and heat map are sensor/GPS-assisted estimates, not exact GPS measurements indoors.
# What's New - Version 1.00.015
- Prepared the Ice Hockey Tracker app for the next Connect IQ release.
- Added updated Connect IQ store screenshots with a cleaner white Garmin-style visual layout.
- Kept the release focused on the main Ice Hockey app, not the separate watch face prototype.
- Continued compatibility with supported fenix, epix, Forerunner, Venu, vivoactive, Enduro, and tactix-class devices.
- Cleaned the manifest so the upload package builds with valid Garmin SDK product identifiers.
Note: distance, shots, rink zones, heat map, workload, and ice/bench detection remain sensor-based estimates when GPS is unavailable.
# What's New - Version 1.00.014
## Visual Redesign - Cleaner, More Intuitive Interface
- Redesigned all app screens with unified header layout and visual hierarchy.
- Added consistent separator lines between headers and content across all screens.
- Improved data readability by preventing text overlap with headers using smart content spacing.
## Live Screen Enhancements
- Added heart rate gauge at the top showing HR zones with color coding:
- Blue: Recovery (60-135 bpm)
- Green: Aerobic (136-150 bpm)
- Yellow: Threshold (151-168 bpm)
- Red: Anaerobic (169-200 bpm)
- HR pointer indicator shows current heart rate position on the gauge.
- Data grid repositioned below gauge for better separation and readability.
## End-Activity Menu Improvements
- Removed button frames for a cleaner, modern look.
- Replaced rolling menu selector with clear 4-option vertical button list.
- Added separator lines instead of frames (similar to Google Fit design).
- Simplified finish screen with clean text-only layout.
## Screen Headers
All screens now feature:
- Clear screen title at the top
- Separator line below header
- Adequate spacing between header and content
