About

This widget calculates and shows the “Swiss Grid” (Swiss Coordinate System) value for the current position. You can choose the CH1903/LV03 or the newer CH1903+/LV95 coordinate system from the settings page. The calculations are approximate, so the results are effectively the same but displayed in the appropriate format. The widget takes the latitude and longitude from your device's GPS location and converts it to the equivalent Swiss Grid value. This is displayed in the standard 5/6 or 7-digit format. Since GPS is often less accurate than this the displayed grid value can be unstable. To overcome this issue you can change the calculated grid resolution. If you are outside the approximate area of Switzerland the widget will display your position in degrees, minutes and seconds. If your device cannot get or has not yet got good enough GPS data no value is shown but the widget will continue trying to acquire a signal. Pressing Menu will stop the widget updating and fix the displayed grid position. Press Menu again to restart updating. The calculations are derived from the approximate formulas in the document “Formulas and constants for the calculation of the Swiss conformal cylindrical projection and for the transformation between coordinate systems” from the Swiss Federal Office of Topography website at https://swisstopo.ch. Widgets are designed to time out and return to showing the watch face. Sometimes the widget times out before it gets a GPS fix. In that case the best thing to do is start an activity, wait until it has GPS then go back to the Swiss Grid widget and try again. The widget was created for my personal use – but I've shared it for anyone who would like to try it. The icon was made by Creatype from flaticon (https://www.flaticon.com/free-icons/switzerland") I've tested the widget on my vívoactive® HR and other devices in the simulator. Please contact me if you have any problems, comments or requests. Include your email address if you would like a reply. Disclaimer Please note that I can accept no responsibility for the correctness of the grid values shown. You should never rely on this widget alone for navigation purposes. To be safe, always understand how to navigate without your Garmin device.
