Virtual Gear Logger +
· v0.9.8l
About
Virtual Gear Logger+ (VGLA) is a Connect IQ Data Field that displays gear, pedaling, power, lap and Bike data, and records VGLA data in the activity FIT file. It supports electronic/mechanical shifting.
Electronic mode displays front/rear gear data. Tested with Shimano 12-speed Di2 and SRAM AXS 12-speed.
Mechanical mode estimates the gear from configured chainrings, sprockets, wheel circumference, and live speed/cadence. VGLA and Analyzer both include prediction models.
VGLA CONFIGURATOR
https://toab.lovestoblog.com/VGLA_Configurator.html
This free JP/EN browser tool edits all 138 standard VGLA settings.
Preview VGLA/Edge layouts and save JSON backups. Apply settings to v0.9.8h by generating a code and syncing it through Garmin Connect Mobile.
Applying a settings code:
1. Save/discard any recording and leave VGLA idle.
2. Generate and copy the full code in Configurator.
3. Paste it into “Settings code (VGLA1 / part)” in Garmin Connect Mobile; save and sync.
4. Confirm “OK” and the 8-character ID on Edge.
Browser-local save is available; keep a JSON backup. Bike Total distance correction and maintenance resets use Garmin Connect Mobile.
Note: v0.9.8h mobile settings are English only. Bike and maintenance names support Unicode.
DISPLAY AND BIKES
Configure six Pages with independent 2/4/6/8-cell layouts, items, and fonts. Items include gear, PB/TE/PS, cadence, heart rate, grade, power, lap, battery, and workout data. Background, threshold colors, and brightness are adjustable. PB/TE/PS use a 3-second average.
Store four Bike Settings with name, Electronic/Mechanical mode, gear display, gearing, and wheel circumference.
On touchscreen Edge devices, tap before recording for Bike 1-4 and during recording for Page 1-6. Garmin Connect Mobile can also select Bike/Page.
Recording locks Bike and drivetrain settings. Bike changes and settings codes are rejected during recording; Page and display changes remain available.
MAIN FEATURES
Electronic/mechanical gear; six 2/4/6/8-cell Pages; four Bikes; PB/TE/PS; cadence/heart rate/grade/timer/time/speed/distance; power/average/30s/NP/IF/TSS/Work; altitude/ascent/descent/calories; current/last lap; Workout NOW/NEXT and remaining time/distance; Edge/power meter/shifting/Varia/light batteries; Bike distance/time; three named maintenance items with distance/time reset; threshold colors; VGLA FIT recording.
VGLA ANALYZER

BASIC USE
1. Add VGLA to an activity-profile data screen.
2. Select Electronic or Mechanical; for Mechanical, enter actual gearing and wheel circumference.
3. Set cells/items for Pages 1-6.
4. Start recording.
5. Analyze the FIT file when needed.
TRIAL AND PURCHASE
VGLA has a 7-day free trial. Continued use requires a KiezelPay VGLA license (US$5, one-time purchase). VGLA Analyzer and Configurator are free.

If no purchase code appears, check the smartphone/Garmin Connect Mobile connection and restart Edge. If hard to read, temporarily place VGLA in a one-field layout.
DATA HANDLING
Configurator editing and Analyzer FIT processing occur in the browser. Settings, original FIT files, ride data, and results are not sent to a VGLA server. KiezelPay handles licensing and purchasing.
NOTES
VGLA is a Data Field and must be added to a data screen. Electronic-shifting compatibility is not guaranteed for every system. Mechanical gears are estimates and may differ from the actual gear. PB/TE/PS and battery items require compatible devices that provide those data. Always prioritize road conditions, traffic laws, and safe riding.
SUPPORTED DEVICES
Edge 540 / 550 / 840 / 850 / 1040 / 1050
Minimum Connect IQ API: 5.2.2
What's new
Virtual Gear Logger+ Version History
v0.9.8k (Changes since v0.9.8h)
- Improved automatic recovery of the selected Bike when recording starts from the Edge activity profile screen without opening VGLA first. Also improved the "Bike locked" handling.
- The confirmed Bike name is displayed in the center of the screen for about five seconds when recording starts. It also appears when VGLA loads late after a direct start.
Note: Save or discard any activity in progress before updating. After the update, confirm that the correct Bike name appears when recording starts.
v0.9.8h (Changes from v0.9.8f)
・Fixed a bug where the configured bike would change unexpectedly; the bike and gear settings at the start of a session are now locked until the session ends.
・Added a safety feature: if settings cannot be restored during a session, "Bike locked" is displayed, and gear display, FIT gear recording, and distance/time accumulation for specific bikes are halted for the unknown bike.
・Added support for receiving 138-item configuration codes created via the browser-based configuration tool.
・Consolidated Garmin Connect Mobile settings into 20 items. Users can now manage configuration codes/status, Bikes 1–4, Pages 1–6, distance settings for each bike, and maintenance resets.
・Legacy data (138-item configurations, bike totals, and maintenance status) will be migrated to the new configuration format.
v0.9.8f
- Expanded the display from four to six pages. Each page can independently use 2, 4, 6, or 8 cells and its own font size.
- Added current-lap and last-lap number, time, distance, average Power, Work, average Heart Rate, average Cadence, average Speed, ascent, and descent.
- Added total distance/time for Bike 1-4 and three distance/time maintenance counters for each Bike.
- Added Power Meter and shifting-system battery displays.
- Standardized PB/TE/PS on a three-second moving average and reorganized CAD/HR/mechanical-gear background brightness into five levels.
- Improved item order, grid visibility, settings persistence, the license screen, and purchase-code visibility in small Data Field layouts.
v0.9.8
- Added current/next Workout targets and remaining time/distance.
- Added Smart Trainer mode, target power, resistance, slope, speed, and distance.
- Added Varia and Light Battery displays and optimized small Edge x40/x50 layouts.
v0.9.7
- Added selectable 4-cell or 6-cell layouts, including a 2-column x 3-row layout on all four pages, while retaining 4-cell compatibility.
v0.9.6
- Added Power, NP, IF, TSS, Work, altitude, ascent/descent, calories, HR, cadence, speed, Edge Battery, and other ride metrics.
- Reorganized display items by purpose and updated to Connect IQ API 5.2.2.
v0.9.5
- Added up to four Bike profiles and four display pages, mechanical gear prediction, Bike/Page switching, and Grade.
- Reorganized settings and icons and migrated to Connect IQ API 5.
