Time grows here. On TREE, each of the four clock digits is a deciduous tree. A sapling breaks ground at the foot of the number and the trunk climbs the stroke, narrowing as it goes. Limbs fork off to alternate sides behind the tip, a small cluster of leaves opens at the end of each one, and a bud sits at the very top where the wood is still new. The lower trunk stays bare and the crown thickens toward the tip, the way a real tree carries its weight — so the number reads as a tree first and a digit second. Then it stands there, swaying very slightly, and waits. When the minute turns, the tree does what trees do. Its leaves dry from yellow through orange to brown, the tip draws back down toward the root, and the canopy comes loose and tumbles away — while a new sapling is already pushing up through what is left of it. Nothing slides, nothing flips. One tree finishes; the next one begins. Six colourways carry the year. Spring is a yellow-green flush on mid-brown bark. Summer is deep green over bark gone dark beneath a full canopy. Autumn burns gold and orange with red at the buds. Blossom sets pink against near-black wood. Winter Bare has no leaves at all — bare wood, bare buds, snow-pale light along the branches. And Grove gives every digit its own season at once, so the hour and the minute are standing months apart. Behind them, five painted woodlands: Painted Woods, a deciduous grove at three depths; Autumn Hill, a bare ridge against a low amber sky; Misty Pines, conifers dissolving into fog bands; Night Grove, bare wood under a cold moon; and Snow Field, dark trunks in a lit drift. Every one is painted rather than photographed, and every one is kept dark so the trees in front of it stay legible. The date sits above the clock in a bark-and-branch typeface, with battery and daily steps along the bottom and an optional small digital readout underneath — glance information, nothing more.
