Best Splits
· v1.0.7
About
Best Splits finds the fastest rolling window for up to five distances during any running activity and shows them live on your data screen. Pick any five from:
800 m · 1 km · 1 mi · 3 km · 5 km · 5 mi · 10 km · 10 mi · 20 km · half marathon · marathon
Garmin Connect reports your all-time Personal Records for these distances, but only when you actually set a new PR — the rest of the time you have no ideahow close you were. Best Splits fills that gap by computing your fastest 1 km, 5 km, 10 km (etc.) of this run, every run, whether it's a PB or just an easy Tuesday recovery.
How it works:
- As you run, the field records a sample every 25 metres of forward progress.
- A rolling-window algorithm continuously finds the fastest window for each target distance reached so far. Rows populate as you cross each target.
- The window's left endpoint is linearly interpolated between samples, soreported splits land within a second of the per-second-record truth — no over-counting from coarse sample boundaries.
- At the end of the activity, each best time is written into the FIT file as a session-summary field, so it shows up in Garmin Connect's activity details alongside pace, HR, etc.
- A history of recent activities' bests is kept in on-watch storage.
Settings: five slot dropdowns, one per row. Pick the distance for each slot (or "none" to leave a slot empty). Slot order is row order on the watch. Defaults to 1 km / 5 km / 10 km / half marathon out of the box; switch any slot to marathon, 800 m, mile-based distances, etc. via Connect IQ on your phone.
Recommended layout: a single-field screen so all rows are visible at once. The field is round-bezel-aware and tuned for MIP displays.
If Best Splits is useful to you, tips are appreciated at https://buymeacoffee.com/alphalima — entirely optional, the app stays free regardless.
What's new
v1.0.5 - You can now choose which distances Best Splits tracks for you.
Open the app's settings (in Connect IQ mobile or on your watch) to toggle from 11 distances:
800 m, 1 km, 1 mile, 3 km, 5 km, 5 mile, 10 km, 10 mile, 20 km, half marathon, marathon.
Pick any 5. Defaults match v1.0.4 (1 km / 5 km / 10 km / HM / M) so existing users see no change until you open settings.
The on-FIT time format auto-adjusts based on how many distances are enabled — H:MM:SS when 4 or fewer are on (room for full hours), MM:SS
when 5 are on (still covers up to 999 minutes for ultra-long runs). On-watch display always picks the most readable form per row.
v1.0.6 - Settings are now five slot dropdowns instead of 11 toggles. Each slot picks one of 11 distances (800m / 1km / 1mi / 3km / 5km / 5mi / 10km / 10mi / 20km / HM / M) or "(none)". Slot order = row order on the watch — set Slot 1 to your most important distance and it appears at the top of the data field.
Defaults match v1.0.5 (1km / 5km / 10km / HM / M, shortest-first). Existing users will see their settings reset to defaults; reapply via the Connect IQ mobile app.
1.0.7 - Best-split times now match Garmin's own personal-record detection to within a second, even when your pace varies sharply at a target distance. Previously, splits could appear tens of seconds slower than they actually were because window endpoints landed on coarse 50 m sample boundaries. Sampling is now twice as fine (25 m), and the algorithm interpolates between samples to put the window's start at exactly the target distance.
