The insidious part: this zone often feels like productive training. ■ The Idea ■ Your heart rhythm reveals how your autonomic nervous system responds to current load — including heat, sleep, stress, and fatigue. DFA α1, a measure derived from heart rhythm, makes the transition between calm aerobic and glycolytically stressed metabolism visible. Breathspan deliberately targets α1 ≈ 0.85 — a safety margin above the VT₁ indicator around ≈ 0.75 discussed in research, because universal thresholds vary individually. In this zone, fat oxidation dominates: mitochondria receive the right stimulus, stress stays lower, glycolytic episodes are minimized.
