■ The Problem ■
Many endurance athletes train too hard — not for short-term performance, but for long-term health. They end up in the gray zone where glycolysis dominates instead of fat oxidation, stress rises, and recovery suffers. The insidious part: this zone often feels like productive training.
■ The Idea ■
Your heart rhythm reveals how your autonomic nervous system responds to current load — including heat, sleep, stress, and fatigue. DFA α1, a measure derived from heart rhythm, makes the transition between calm aerobic and glycolytically stressed metabolism visible.
Breathspan deliberately targets α1 ≈ 0.85 — a safety margin above the VT₁ indicator around ≈ 0.75 discussed in research, because universal thresholds vary individually. In this zone, fat oxidation dominates: mitochondria receive the right stimulus, stress stays lower, glycolytic episodes are minimized.
Breathspan guides you with multiple signals simultaneously: α1 as a live metabolic observer, plus power, heart rate, and breathing rate as supplementary anchors. In the power chart, you see whether accumulated load will tip α1 — a visual early warning, since α1 responds with a delay.
An adaptive guide calculates a watt target and communicates directional changes directly at your wrist — without needing to glance at the screen:
• 3 short pulses: more power is possible again
• 2 pulses with a longer pause: reduce load
The guide is deliberately conservative: it slows you down but gives room again as soon as your nervous system is ready.

• After each adjustment: wait 30 seconds — and observe how α1 and power respond.

After each session, Breathspan records the heart rate, pace, and power at which your α1 crossed 0.75 and 0.50 today — personal daily markers, not rigid thresholds. As your power at these crossings rises over weeks, your glycolytic dominance decreases. That's the progress that matters.
