E-mail and SMS via IFTTT

BEFORE YOU WRITE A REVIEW: • Please READ the description carefully (click the word 'MORE' below!) • Consider using the link 'CONTACT DEVELOPER' on this page to give feedback or ask questions ___ This app allows you to send quick e-mails or text messages from your watch using IFTTT webhooks. No companion app is required, but you need an IFTTT account and it may take some time to configure. . Instructions: . ✔✔✔ PART I: Configure your IFTTT account ✔✔✔ . • If you do not have an IFTTT account, create it on http://ifttt.com • If you haven't activated Webhooks on your IFTTT account, do it on https://ifttt.com/services/maker_webhooks/settings • Once you've done this, you will get a secret key. This is actually the last part of the URL that you will use to trigget Webhook events. Such a URL looks like https://maker.ifttt.com/trigger/{event_name}/with/key/{key}?value1=a&value2=b&value3=c . We will talk about "event_name" and the "values" later. • Now you can create IFTTT applets ("recipes") that are triggered by Webhooks. For example, you can create something like "if WEBHOOK then EMAIL" • When creating the applet for this widget, choose "Webhooks" as trigget ("if") and your preferred mail or SMS service ("that") • Choose any "event_name" that you like. You will have to enter it on the widget settings (see Part II). • Then you should use "ingredients" for the recipient ("value1"), for the subject ("value2") and for the body ("value3") • Gmail is not available on IFTTT anymore. Hopefully it can help you creating a similar thing for other IFTTT-compatible mail services. . ✔✔✔ PART II: Configure the app settings ✔✔✔ • Enter your IFTTT Webhook key in the widget settings via the Garmin Connect Mobile app on your phone or on Garmin Express on your computer. It is similar than what you have to do for watch faces (e.g. http://actiface.blogspot.com/2018/03/connect-iq-application-settings.html) • You can also set your favorite contact addresses and some quick responses. . ✔✔✔ PART III: Using the widget ✔✔✔ • Press START to activate the widget and press it AGAIN to open the menu. It will allow you to select the recipient (new contact or one of your favorites) , the subject (new text or quick response) and the body (*append* a new text or a quick response) • You can edit the IFTTT key and event name directly on the watch, but maybe you will not find all the necessary characters. So we recommend that you do it as described in Part II. • It is not possible to precisely detect if everything went ok. We cannot verify, for example, if you made a mistake when setting your IFTTT key, or if the mail service is not available. Therefore no confirmation is displayed. • Even when everything works well, it can take a minute or two before the message is effectively sent. It depends on IFTTT and on the connected service (e.g. Email). . ___ Privacy policy r.485 apps do NOT collect or sell any personal information. Some r.485 apps, however, offer interfaces on which you can request data from third-party services (e.g. IFTTT). These services may be able to access and collect some of your information on the moment you make a request. r.485 has no influence on this data collection process and will not be responsible for any privacy issues related to you and the third-party services. Here is a workaround suggested by our friend Thomas which uses IFTTT webhooks and basic e-mail forwarding rules. INSTRUCTIONS: Step 1: Standard stuff, make an IFTTT account. Step 2: Connect to their email service (use your icloud email when connecting to it). Step 3: Create an applet with the IF THIS being a webrequest via WEBHOOKS and THEN THAT being the standard EMAIL service you just connected to. Step 4: Input ingredients Value1 and Value2 into subject box and Value 3 into the text body box below it. Step5: Copy your webhooks IFTTT key to the settings of the widget and your chosen event name which you would have made during the create an applet phase. Step 6: Head to your icloud account on your PC, sign in and go to email, go down to settings and click Rules... Step 7: Create a new rule: The trigger should be if a message has subject containing: ([email protected] INSERT RANDOM WORD HERE) then (in the box below) forward to ([email protected]) Step 8: Select one of the quick message boxes in the email/sms widget settings and input INSERT RANDOM WORD HERE (does not have to be that specific phrase). Repeat steps 7-8 for as many contacts as the garmin widget allows. --- Thomas also came up with a solution for sending an sms using IFTTT and the iOS 14 automation features: Step 1: connect to the standard SMS channel on IFTTT (I couldn’t do it on the ios app but managed to do so on the android app (on a tablet), might also be able to connect on the PC site). Step 2: Create an applet with the IF THIS as recieve a webhook url and THEN THAT as send me an sms, Note! Add ingredients value 2 and value 3, value 1 is unimportant for this sms solution. Step 3: Open ios (version iOS 14) shortcuts and head to the automation feature. Step 4: Create an automation and set the WHEN action as message containing a phrase such as: “garmin to betty” and then the DO action as the copy to clipboard feature, Note! set it so the thing it copies is: Shortcut Input as message. Step 5: Add another DO by tapping the plus button underneath the first DO. Step 6: Make the second DO use the message function. Step 7: Make it so the message sends the clipboard to your chosen person (in this case betty). Step 8: Recreate this for each contact you wish to sms it is a good idea for the key phrase from step 4 to contain the contacts name. Step 9: Ensure that in the email/sms widget settings you ensure you have a quick reply set that matches the phrase used in step 4 for each contact, this case being “garmin to betty”. This saves you from typing it out on your watch. If done correctly, when activated IFTTT will send you an sms containing your keyphrase and message, ios automations will then copy that message to clipboard and forward that to someone depending on the keyphrase you used. .
