About
PhipsReferee is a Garmin app designed specifically for referees who need reliable match timing combined with full activity recording.
The app focuses on fast and safe operation during a match. Important match functions are controlled using the physical buttons of the watch. This prevents rain, sweat or accidental screen touches from triggering match-related actions.
The main match screen can display several relevant timers at the same time. The large center timer as well as the smaller upper and lower timers can be configured individually.
Features
Match timing with elapsed time, remaining time and stoppage time.
Stoppage time can be started and stopped at any time during the match.
Full match suspensions can be recorded separately. During a suspension, the regular match timers pause while the suspension duration is measured independently.
Support for different match formats with configurable number of periods, period duration and break duration.
Preset match configurations provide quick setup while custom configurations are also supported.
Optional extra time with two additional periods and configurable break duration.
Optional penalty shootout mode.
Protection against accidentally ending a match early using a multi-step confirmation process with the START button.
Full GPS and FIT activity recording.
Activities can be stored as Soccer, Team Sport, Running or Generic Activity.
Distance and heart rate can be displayed and recorded.
After the match, additional performance information is available including distance, current heart rate, average heart rate, maximum heart rate and pace.
Four additional information fields on the match screen can be configured individually, for example period, heart rate, distance, current time or GPS status.
Vibration alerts help indicate important match events such as stoppage time and overtime.
Multiple backlight options are available.
Touch input can be used for menu navigation on supported devices or disabled when desired. During an active match, match-critical controls are intentionally handled through physical buttons.
The user interface automatically adapts to different Garmin display sizes and resolutions.
PhipsReferee supports German and English and automatically follows the language setting of the Garmin device.
PhipsReferee was created to combine the essential functions of a traditional referee watch with the capabilities of modern Garmin sports watches: fast operation, clear match timing and complete GPS and activity recording.

What's new
PhipsReferee 1.0.5
Added a two-step match start: the first START press opens the match screen in ready mode, while the second START press starts the timers, FIT recording and start vibration.
Improved PRESTART layout: the period indicator such as “1st Half” stays hidden until the actual kick-off to prevent overlapping text.
Elapsed match time now runs cumulatively across all periods. In a 2 × 45 minute match, the second half starts at 45:00 and continues to 90:00.
Remaining time stays period-based and restarts from the configured period duration in each half.
Stoppage time from a previous period is not carried into the next period’s starting value.
All vibration alerts were increased to maximum intensity and made more noticeable.
Stronger alerts for match start, regulation time, suspension, resume, match end, lost time and stoppage-time reminders.
Break timer now counts upward and triggers one strong vibration reminder when the configured break duration is reached.
Number of extra-time periods can be configured.
Added support for Garmin Venu 2, Venu 2S and Venu 2 Plus with adapted touch and button controls.
Optimized the Timers Only layout for smaller and older displays.
Additional layout, stability and compatibility improvements.
PhipsReferee 1.0.4
Added support for Garmin Venu 2, Venu 2S and Venu 2 Plus and lowered the minimum requirement to Connect IQ 5.0.
Added safe touch handling for older touchscreen devices: taps, holds and swipes cannot trigger match actions while a match is active.
Optimized the Timers Only layout for Venu 2 devices.
Reworked the break timer: it now counts upward, the configured break duration triggers one strong 3-second reminder, and the timer continues afterwards.
Expanded extra time: choose 1 or 2 extra periods.
Short BACK/LAP controls lost time and DOWN controls suspension/resume. Quick double BACK remains the fallback on devices without DOWN.
GPS/FIT recording, GPS-fix notification, activity types, penalty timer, performance pages and strong 3-second vibration feedback remain included.
Additional layout, stability and compatibility improvements.
Release Notes 1.0.2 - English
Added a new “Timers Only” display mode that hides all additional data fields and shows the three match timers significantly larger.
Reworked GPS and distance recording, added continuous positioning and a “GPS ACQUIRED” notification.
Improved hardware controls for lost time and full match suspension: short BACK/LAP controls lost time, DOWN suspends/resumes play on devices with a DOWN button, while two-button watches use a double-BACK fallback.
Removed touch control from match actions. Touch is limited to menu navigation on supported devices and can be disabled there when supported.
Added strong 3-second vibration feedback for match start, regulation time, suspension, resume and match end.
Fixed the penalty shootout timer.
Optimized settings headings for smaller displays.
Additional stability and compiler cleanups.
