Shodo: Brush Calligraphy

A watch face written with a brush. The hour sits above the minute in calligraphic numerals, drawn close to the size the original artwork was painted at. There is no colon — the stack reads as a time on its own. The weekday and date stand at the left in the same brush hand, the piece is signed with a seal, and a single ink stroke sweeps the perimeter as a progress ring: pressed where it enters, full through the body, whipped to a point at the head, so the taper travels with your progress instead of sitting there as a constant-width band. Every character on the face is set in that one brush hand. Time, weekday, date, readings, captions. No second typeface at any size, and no numerals borrowed from a system font. WHAT YOU CAN CHANGE • Four complication slots, each chosen from ten sources: heart rate, steps, distance, calories, floors, active minutes, Body Battery, notifications, battery, or off. • The perimeter stroke measures step goal, battery, floors goal, active-minutes goal — or is turned off entirely. • Six colourways: Sumi (cream ink, vermilion seal), Snow, Gold, Moss, Indigo, and Paper — dark ink on warm paper, the one light theme. • 12/24-hour, following your watch by default. • Month/day or day/month date order. WHAT YOU CANNOT There are no free colour pickers, and that is deliberate. A brush face lives or dies on how the ink sits against the paper; arbitrary RGB makes the dry-brush texture disappear and turns a calligraphic face into a novelty one within about two taps. The six pairs above are the ones the artwork survives. BUILT FOR THE PANEL IT RUNS ON Colours are authored twice — once for AMOLED, once for the transflective MIP panels, which render only sixty-four colours and quietly turn a vermilion seal orange if you let them. Every MIP value is an exact hardware colour, so nothing is approximated on the way to the screen. On AMOLED watches the always-on screen is a dimmed, pixel-shifted version of the same face. The perimeter stroke is omitted there, because it would be the largest lit area on the panel. On MIP watches that code is never installed at all. The face shows no seconds, so nothing ticks and nothing is redrawn between minutes. That is why it is light on your battery rather than in spite of it. PERMISSIONS One: sensor history, and only so that heart rate and Body Battery can show a recent reading instead of a dash. No location, no weather, no network. NOTES English only. The weekday and the complication captions are painted glyphs rather than letters set from a font — brush capitals have to be kerned as whole words — so the face reads WED whatever language your watch is set to. The smallest panels (under 300px) carry no captions under the readings; there is no room for a third line under a round bezel, and the readings run larger there instead.
