About

Thank you for downloading Chat App. We would like to make this app as great as possible, so feel free to send us feedback. Chat App turns your Garmin watch into an actual messaging device. Read and reply to conversations right from your wrist. It connects to Matrix (https://matrix.org), an open messaging network, through a small "bridge" program you run yourself. The unusual part: it works over Wi-Fi, not just Bluetooth. Chat App can sync straight over the watch's own Wi-Fi, so you can pull new messages and send replies even when your phone is in another room, dead, or left at home. Please rate this app and leave a review, it really helps! Request features if you have good ideas! PLEASE READ FIRST — THIS APP REQUIRES SETUP Chat App is built for technically-inclined users and does not work on its own (except for the Notes feature, which works without matrix). Before it does anything, you must: 1. Have a Matrix account (free — make one in a minute on matrix.org), and 2. Run the small bridge program on a computer of your own and connect the watch to it. If you're not willing to run a small always-on bridge on a server you own, this app isn't for you. Complete step-by-step setup guide: https://gist.github.com/avrumibloch-web/c6f8f1238a9a334e2d6acc35c810ba76 This is NOT an instant messenger — when connected to your phone over Bluetooth, the watch checks for messages on a schedule (as often as every 15 minutes, or on demand), to respect the battery. Otherwise it can be synced manually over Wi-Fi when your phone isn't nearby. Think "stay reachable," not "live chat." FEATURES • Send & receive over Wi-Fi — message even when your phone isn't with you (rare on a watch) • Read & send real messages from your wrist • Quick replies — 8 one-tap responses you can customize • Type message — compose custom replies on the watch keyboard • Notes — a private scratchpad chat, just for you (works offline) • New-message notifications — background checks buzz your wrist ("3 new messages") • Choose your check interval — 15 min, 30 min, hourly, every 2/4 hours, or off • Smooth scrolling by touch or buttons, with chat bubbles shaped to fit the round screen GOOD TO KNOW • You set up your Matrix account and start chats in a normal Matrix app on your phone — Element X is the easy choice. Chat App is the companion that puts those conversations on your wrist. • Talks only to the bridge URL you configure — no developer servers, no analytics, no accounts to sign up for. • Your Matrix credentials live on your own bridge, on hardware you control. • Privacy policy: https://gist.github.com/avrumibloch-web/c61b17db84dec84dd60f77b35b0fca73 SETUP OVERVIEW 1. Get a Matrix account (free) and run the bridge program on your own computer; note its URL and access token. 2. Install Chat App on your watch. 3. In the Garmin Connect IQ phone app, open Chat App's settings and enter your Bridge URL and Bearer token. 4. Open the app and tap Sync. SUPPORTED WATCHES Recent round Forerunner, Fenix, and Epix models. More may be added in future updates. "Matrix" refers to an open messaging protocol. Chat App is an independent client and is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by The Matrix.org Foundation or Garmin. If you have trouble setting it up, feel free to press Contact Developer or leave a review
