Formula
Last Minute Effort = (Elevation gain in 60s × 36 ÷ 60) + (Average speed of last 60s × 3.6)
How it works
Maintains 60-second rolling window of altitude and speed data
Calculates elevation gain over last minute (ignoring descents)
Smoothed calculation: 36 × ascent rate + 3.6 × speed

Scientific Background
This data field implements the scientifically-established equivalency between elevation gain and flat distance effort:
1:10 ratio: 100m elevation gain ≈ 1km flat distance (Scarf, 2007)
Metabolic equivalency: Similar energy expenditure for climbing vs. flat running
Time averaging: 60-second window reduces GPS noise while maintaining responsiveness
Exercise physiology: Based on studies of mountain runners and grade-adjusted pace research
Research shows that 1m elevation gain requires approximately the same energy as 8-10m of flat running, depending on athlete characteristics. The 60-second averaging window provides stable readings suitable for pacing strategies.
