VMG

This is a race training app for kitefoilng, windsurfing and sailing. It calculates velocity made good (VMG) based on speed and angle relative to the wind. Focusing on VMG rather than boat speed helps you focus your training on making the right trade off between boat speed and angle. The app's focal point is VMG. It's the large number on the top half of the screen. VMG will be positive when you're heading upwind and negative downwind. The bottom left number shows boat speed in knots. The bottom right number shows bearing. The very bottom of the app shows the true wind direction (TWD), which you need to set manually. The left middle shows the time and the right middle tells you whether the app is recording. In order to calculate VMG, you must set the true wind direction ("twd" at the bottom of the screen). To change the true wind direction, use the UP and DOWN keys. The UP key is the middle key on the left and the DOWN key is the bottom key on the left. If you hold the UP key TWD will increase by 45 degrees. To record your session, hit the START button (top right button). To pause that session, hit the START button again. To save the recorded session, hit the BACK button (bottom right button), which also exits the app. #Tips for setting the True Wind Direction I found setting the TWD direction frustrating for my first 2-3 sessions. Hopefully these tips help you get past any frustration quickly. 0 corresponds to due north and 180 corresponds to due south. You should approximate the TWD while you're still on land. To do this I recommend facing the wind and using the compass widget (installed on the phone by default). Once you're on the water, do a few tacks and look at your angle on port tack and your angle on starboard tack. (I have found it more reliable to set TWD based on upwind angles, rather than downwind angles.) The difference between your port tack angle and starboard tack angle is the true wind direction. So if your port tack angle is 180 degrees and your starboard tack angle is 270 degrees, the true wind direction is 225 degrees. If you notice that your VMG is systematically higher on one tack than the other, that suggests you need to adjust the true wind direction. If the wind direction is swinging around, setting the TWD will be frustrating. You can still use the app without setting TWD by focusing for boat speed and bearing.
