Virtual Gear Logger
· v1.0.0
About
Virtual Gear Logger (VGLA) is a free Connect IQ data field that displays the current front and rear gear positions on Garmin Edge devices and records gear-use data in the activity FIT file. It supports electronic and mechanical shifting.
With electronic shifting, front and rear gear information available from the shifting system is displayed and recorded.
With mechanical shifting, gear position is not obtained directly from the derailleur. Instead, VGLA estimates the current front and rear gears from the configured chainrings, sprockets, wheel circumference, Speed, and Cadence.
The field displays four customizable items per page. Available items include Front Gear, Rear Gear, Cadence, Heart Rate, Grade, Speed, Distance, Timer, and Current Time. The display font, background color, and data colors are also customizable.
When “Record VGLA Data to FIT” is ON, gear information obtained or estimated during the activity is added to the FIT file in a VGLA-specific format.
The recorded data can be loaded into the free VGLA Analyzer for detailed post-ride review of gear usage and shift history.

[Basic Use]
1. Install the app and add this data field to a data screen in the activity profile you use.
2. Select Electrical or Mechanical as the shifting mode.
3. When using Mechanical mode, configure the actual chainrings, sprockets, and wheel circumference.
4. Configure the display items, Gear Display Mode, font, and colors.
5. To review the activity in VGLA Analyzer, enable “Record VGLA Data to FIT.”
6. Start the activity to display and record the gear positions and selected ride data.
7. After the ride, load the FIT file into VGLA Analyzer to review gear usage and shift history.
[Price]
This app is free. There is no trial period or in-app purchase.
VGLA Analyzer, which provides detailed post-ride review, is also available free of charge.
VGLA Analyzer is a separate web service provided independently from the app.
[Data Handling]
When “Record VGLA Data to FIT” is ON, VGLA-specific gear-use data is added to the activity FIT file in an app-specific format.
When OFF, the field can still be used for on-ride display, but the VGLA-specific data required for VGLA Analyzer review is not added to the FIT file.
VGLA Analyzer processes FIT loading and analysis locally in the browser. Original FIT files, activity data, and analysis results are not uploaded to the VGLA server.
[Important Notes]
• This is a data field. After installation, add it to a data screen in the activity profile you use.
• Electronic mode uses gear information that the Edge can obtain from a compatible electronic shifting system.
• Compatibility with every electronic shifting system is not guaranteed.
• Mechanical mode does not obtain the actual gear position directly from the derailleur.
• In Mechanical mode, gear position is estimated from Speed, Cadence, and the configured drivetrain.
• For Mechanical mode, correctly configure the actual chainrings, sprockets, and wheel circumference.
• Riding conditions, sensor reception, configuration, or the period immediately after shifting may cause the estimated gear position or shift timing to differ from actual o
