IridiumWhere displays real-time information about the Iridium satellite constellation, including radar view, world map and textual data. This allows inReach users to point their device to satellites and avoid obstacles. The Iridium satellite constellation enables inReach users to communicate from remote locations, anywhere in the world. The knowledge of satellite location is useful to remove any obstacle from satellite line-of-sight and ensure antenna is not pointing in an incorrect direction. You can try https://satmap.space RADAR VIEW The large outer circle represents the horizon (8.2 degrees up from the horizon to be precise). The small inner circle represents 45 degrees angle up from the horizon. User is represented as a central red dot. The number of circles around the red dot indicate the accuracy of GPS position (1 dot only: poor, 1 dot + 1 circle: usable, 1 dot + 2 circles: good). If the position is not available or last position is used, a large red cross appears. Distance is optionally indicated below each visible satellite. This is a slant range, meaning between user and satellite (not the ground distance). This is an approximate distance. An optional line indicates the position of each visible satellite 5 minutes into the future. MAP VIEW All 66 operational satellites are displayed in real time on the world map. User location is represented as a red dot. TEXT DATA Depending on the device, additional data is available. On handhelds, the 3rd page is a full screen of text data about all 66 satellites. It has 3 subpages: Subpage 1: last refresh (indicates if representation is outdated) Subpage 2: orbital data age (new orbital data is published by NORAD whenever the previous data is no longer accurate enough) Subpage 3: Lat/Lon On certain screens, a % or double % appears. This is the processor load. If there is just one %, it is the instantaneous load. If there are two %, the first is instantaneous, the second is a moving average. MENU You can edit map mode and options. In the menu, Text Data refers to the 4 datapoints around the radar screen. DATA DOWNLOAD Orbital data needs to be downloaded on first use (automatic process on startup). An indicator shows data freshness. Data will be downloaded automatically every time the app starts. It is recommended to download data (start the app) before going on an adventure to ensure data freshness. Up-to-date data means that the position of satellites calculated by the app is accurate. If data is more than 10 days old, the position will be approximate. If the data is more than 30 days old, the position will be plain wrong. COMPATIBILITY I have tested this app only on GPSMAP 66i (screen size 240x400) and D2 Charlie, similar to Fenix series (screen size 240x240). I have not tested or developed for other devices.
