Ten cats are counting on you. Cats & Steps puts a shelf of ten hand-painted cats on your wrist — sleeping, sprawled on their backs, sitting up in baskets and peering out of cat-house doorways. Each one is worth a tenth of your daily step goal, and they are yours to keep for the day. But only if you walk. Set your goal and how long you want to take over it — 10,000 steps in 15 hours, say — and the face works out your pace: one cat per 1,000 steps per hour and a half. Stay ahead and the shelf stays full. Fall behind, and when a checkpoint passes without the steps to cover it, one of your cats becomes a small grey headstone that reads "Dead Cat". They do not come back. Catching up stops the bleeding — no more cats die — but the graves stay put until your day rolls over the next morning, so an afternoon on the sofa is an afternoon you can see. Hit your goal and every cat still standing is safe for the rest of the day. Which cat goes first is reshuffled every morning, so the shelf never empties the same way twice. Under the shelf you get your step count against your goal, and a countdown to the next cat you are about to lose — it turns red when you are nearly out of time. Above it sits a large, clear clock with the day on one side and the current temperature on the other. Make it yours: six hand-painted shelf scenes — Sage, Rainbow, Nordic, Bamboo, Blossom and Rustic — or set Random and get a different one each morning. Four text styles, a 12- or 24-hour clock, and Celsius or Fahrenheit. Set your own daily goal from 4,000 to 20,000 steps, your own deadline from 8 to 18 hours, and the hour your day begins — anywhere from 04:00 to 12:00, so your cats are safe while you sleep instead of dying at 1:30 in the morning. Everything can be changed straight from the watch, so you never need to reach for your phone.
