MANTRA｜Draw your Instinct

This watch face embodies the concept and meaning of ancestral heritage, particularly reflected in the Saman Dance. Saman Dance has been practiced for hundreds of years and is deeply ingrained in the life of the Acehnese people, especially the Gayo tribe. Both the younger and older generations love Saman Dance, even every village has its own Saman group. Saman Dance served as a medium for delivering messages or missionary endeavors as it was accompanied by verses praising the Almighty God. However, during times of war, the verses were slightly modified into “mantras” to instill fighting spirit. Dancers will sit in tight rows, forming a strong foundation to achieve synchronization and harmony in the Saman Dance. Saman Dance is performed without musical instruments, but instead by clapping hands on chests and thighs to set the tempo and rhythm. The rhythm of the movement gradually becomes faster along with the verses, and the clapping gets louder, causing both the dancers and the audiences to be immersed in the performance as if being enchanted by mantras. The design of this watch face is inspired by the dance’s solid movement of clapping and swaying the body in opposite directions (crossing) with specific rhythms, creating the visual of clear overlapping lines that remains harmonious in a distinctive Acehnese ornament shape.
