Surf Balls - Wind, Wave and Tide data
· v1.3.14
About
This widget is a simplified version of the Surf Balls widget optimised for Instinct 2 watches and provides the core information to decide whether it's a good day to go surfing, and if so when, based on 4 key factors (wave height, difference in wind/wave direction, wind speed and wave period). For a given location it will display this information and tide high/low height and times for the next 10 hours. It is also now possible to choose between two 'favourite' locations and a GPS fix.
The glance view shows the summary wave and wind data for the current hour. The initial main screen data is for the current hour (time block highlighted in white at the top) and then you can scroll through the next 8 hour timeslots using the up/down buttons or swiping up/down. All of the data is sourced from Stormglass.io which is a pretty cool global weather API which provides the following data :
- Wind : speed, gust and direction
- Waves : height, period and direction
- Temperature : air and water
- Tide : tide height, high/low tide time and height along with a tide graph
You set the location in the widget settings, my reasoning for this is that personally I want to know about conditions at a location I want to go to, rather than necessarily when I am already there.
I am not a professional developer and I originally started this for as a personal project just for my own use but then decided to share it. The suggestion to port it to the Instinct2 watches came from JT (thanks). If you like it then great, if you don't then that's fine too (just uninstall it). NOTE I do not have an Instinct2 watch and so have to rely on the Garmin simulator for all testing, if you find any bugs or have any positive suggestions and feedback in a review as I'm always interested in ways to enhance it.
