MyOpenWater (beta)
· v1.0.8 beta
About
BETA: this version is being tested in real open water swims. If something goes wrong in your swim, please tell me through Contact Developer.
Open water swimming activity with automatic rest detection by stroke cadence.
Records a real open water swim to your history and Garmin Connect: GPS track, heart rate, stroke count from the wrist accelerometer, calories, laps and water temperature (recorded to the FIT file, shown as charts in Garmin Connect).
Why another open water app? Garmin's Auto Pause is speed based and does not work in open water, because GPS drift keeps speed above the threshold even when you stop. MyOpenWater detects rest by stroke cadence instead: about 10 seconds without strokes pauses the timer, a few strokes at swim cadence resume it. Waiting for your group, resting at a boat or standing on the beach stays out of your swim time and pace.
Features:
- Auto Rest by stroke cadence, configurable in the app settings
- Delayed start: press START on the beach, the timer only begins at your first confirmed strokes
- Auto Lap every 500 m, manual lap with BACK
- 4 data pages, faithful to the native Open Water flow (GPS acquisition, pause menu, summary)
- Water temperature saved to the FIT file
- Distance in a straight line back to the start point
- Optional diagnostics page for the stroke detector
- English and Portuguese, following the watch language
What's new
Fix from beach tests: when the watch closed the app while it was waiting on the GPS screen, the next session could record no GPS track at all. The app now releases the GPS and sensors when it exits, and the activity is created as soon as the GPS screen opens, so the watch no longer closes the app while you wait for a fix. Side effect: the activity start time is now the moment the app was opened, the timer is not affected.
