Phosphor renders time and data the way an old LED panel would: every digit is a 5x7 grid of individually drawn phosphor dots. No bitmap fonts, no glyph atlases - every circle is a native primitive, so the rendering is sharp on every transflective MIP screen, in direct sunlight, at any angle.
The display is split into two zones. The primary zone shows HH:MM in large dot-matrix digits over a dim ghost grid - lit dots bright, unlit dots faintly visible, exactly like a real LED scoreboard. A selectable top complication shows one data readout above the time: Steps, Heart Rate, Watch Battery, Body Battery, or Calories. Or set it to None for a clean clock. A second timezone row sits below the primary time, configurable with a UTC offset and a three-character city label. An optional battery percentage rounds out the display.
Five accent colors - Green (default), Amber, Yellow, Cyan, Red - shift the entire dot palette. On the fenix 7 family, each color also selects a matching colored background, giving the face a distinctive tinted-panel look that varies across the lineup. Forerunner 255 and 955 run the clean dot-matrix rendering without the background.
Always-On Display draws only the lit dots in a dim phosphor color. The ghost grid and any background suppress entirely - the fewest lit pixels of any face in the Luma lineup.
Phosphor redraws once per minute. The background bitmap (where present) is loaded once on settings change and cached, not reloaded each frame. Body Battery reads from SensorHistory on a throttled path. There is no per-second refresh and no animation.
Device compatibility: Phosphor runs on 10 MIP devices across three resolution buckets. fenix 7 series (fenix 7, 7 Pro, 7S, 7S Pro, 7X, 7X Pro, and Pro NoWifi variants) at 260x260, 240x240, and 280x280.
