Paddle Stroke Power
· v1.7.0
About
The Spearers Paddle Stroke Power app turns your compatible Garmin Edge into
a dedicated paddling performance computer.
Designed for kayak, surfski and canoe paddlers, Paddle Stroke Power uses the
Edge’s built-in motion sensors and GPS to analyse your stroke in real time —
metrics that conventional cycling-focused Edge profiles don’t provide.
KEY FEATURES
• LIVE STROKE RATE
See your stroke rate in strokes per minute (SPM) without a separate sensor.
• STROKE WAVEFORM
Watch your stroke shape develop in real time — from catch through the
complete stroke cycle — on a gravity-adjusted waveform. Catch timing is
aligned across STROKE, AARON’S PAGE, and ROLL, with a live phase wipe
along the stroke axis.
• ESTIMATED IMPULSE & POWER
See estimated propulsive impulse (N⋅s) and average power (W) for each stroke
on STROKE and AARON’S PAGE. Enter your paddler and kayak mass in
Settings for better estimates. Impulse is GPS-independent; power uses
stroke-average GPS speed. FIT also records ~2 s 3-stroke impulse/power charts
and session L|R averages when side-lock coverage is at least 50%.
• AARON’S PAGE (on by default — toggle in Settings)
A coach-oriented page with live HR and speed, rotated side waveforms, SPM,
left/right impulse when sides lock, roll balance, distance, and elapsed time.
The accel graph pins coasting V at centre and scales by peak |a−V|.
• KAYAK ROLL (on by default — toggle in Settings)
See how the boat heels through each stroke — live roll angle (°), amplitude
(AMP), stroke-shape consistency (SHAPE), left–right time balance (ROLL BAL),
and jitter (ROLL JITTER %). Positive roll is lean right. Roll is
tilt-compensated about geometric level (0°) with no START roll calibration.
• DISTANCE PER STROKE
See how far the boat travels per stroke, alongside speed and SPM.
• GPS & HEART RATE
Use the Edge’s GPS and a paired heart-rate strap alongside your paddling
metrics on the dedicated NAV page. Set Max Heart Rate in Settings so live HR
fields can tint by percent of max on AARON, NAV, and SUMMARY.
• ACTIVITY RECORDING
Record your paddle as a kayaking Garmin activity. Save GPS, speed, distance,
heart rate, and your session to Garmin Connect — including developer FIT
fields for live SPM and distance per stroke during the activity, plus
session-average SPM and distance per stroke when you save. After STOP,
SUMMARY shows session totals (including AVG/MAX HR). When side-lock coverage
is at least 50%, tap through to SUMMARY2 for locked left/right averages,
percent locked, and mean accel/roll graphs before Continue / Save / Discard.
• DAY / NIGHT DISPLAY
Choose Day, Night, or follow the device Color Mode. Choose which activity
pages appear; NAV always stays on.
WHY PADDLE STROKE POWER?
Garmin Edge computers are excellent training devices, but they’re built
around cycling. Paddlers care about cadence, stroke shape, boat roll, and
how each side feels — not just speed and distance.
Paddle Stroke Power is built specifically for paddlers who want more from
the Edge they already own.
IMPORTANT
Estimated impulse (N⋅s) and power (W) are derived from accelerometer motion,
GPS speed (for power), and your entered mass. They are engineering
estimates — useful for comparing strokes, sessions, and sides — not readings
from a calibrated paddle power meter or lab instrument.
Side A and side B are alternating strokes. When confidence is high the app
may label them as physical right/left from on-boat roll rate — not a
force-plate port/starboard balance.
For best results, mount the Edge firmly and level before START so the short
tilt warm-up can settle. A level hull reads near 0° roll with no START roll
calibration.
Compatible Garmin Edge models are listed in the app’s supported-device
configuration.
What's new
What’s new (1.7.0):
Renamed WAVE activity page to STROKE (settings key pageStroke; still reads legacy pageWave)
Removed BALANCE activity page; swipe order is STROKE → AARON → ROLL → NAV
AARON accel graph pins coasting V at centre; shared scale is peak |a−V| (cached on stroke commit)
SUMMARY2 accel graph pins locked mean coasting V at centre; scale is peak |a−V̄|; graphs fill rows 3–5 (no AVG/MAX HR on SUMMARY2)
Day HR zone field fills lightened; Night fills unchanged
START idle: sensors sleep at 2 min, warn at 4 min, auto-exit at 5 min (tap wakes without starting)
FIT: ~2 s 3-stroke impulse/power charts; session impulse/power/roll as L|R when lock ≥50%
Settings TITLEBAR toggle; SPEED / half-field numeral polish; impulse/power labels by window (LAST / 3-STRK / AVG L|R)
What’s new (1.6.2):
START idle timeout: sensors sleep at 2 min, warn at 4 min, auto-exit at 5 min (tap wakes without starting)
TITLEBAR visibility toggle; SPEED capped at three significant figures
Central data-field registry for consistent ink / stale / averaged chrome; impulse and power labels by window
HR zone fills retuned: grey 50–60% band, purple only at ≥100%; Day/Night colour fix; night fills darkened ~20%
What’s new (1.6.0):
AARON'S PAGE (default on): HR|SPEED, rotated BALANCE waveforms, SPM / L|R impulse / ROLL BAL, DISTANCE|ELAPSED
A/B → L/R SideMapLock with locked-only navy/red (day) and light blue/pink (night) side colours; unlocked A/B share sensor or fg ink
SUMMARY2 when lock coverage ≥50%: locked L|R averages, % locked, mean accel/roll graphs
Max Heart Rate setting (default 170 bpm); HR field fills by % of max on AARON, NAV, SUMMARY
Shared graph header/footer bands (ACCELERATION / ACCEL / ROLL); mid-plot L/R cues; plot canvas puiGraphBg
Cross-page field rules: impulse always N⋅s, L|R dual colours only when locked, SPM rolling-stale dimming, ROLL JITTER label
Longitudinal LP cutoff remains internal (1.5 Hz default); removed from Settings UI
Garmin Connect session stats: Avg Stroke Rate, Avg Distance per Stroke; impulse/power/roll as L|R when lock ≥50%, else single averages
Stronger activity integrity: session distance, pause gating, gap handling, and map epoch hardening
