About

A widget to show current Aurora activity and a forecast of the activity for the next few days. The current status data comes from AuroraWatch UK ( https://aurorawatch.lancs.ac.uk ). It shows the current level and a record of activity over the last 24 hours. The forecast of activity over the next 3 days comes from the Space Weather Prediction Center, National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration https://www.swpc.noaa.gov The widget is not associated or endorsed in any way from either of these sites. The aim is provide a nice quick way to view the Aurora situation in the same way you might flick past things like the weather, sunset time and moon status. Currently there are no alerts, but it is possible to add at some point. The widget is free and will always be free, not least because that is one of the conditions for using AuroraWatch UK data. Technical details: The data is processed so the downloads to the watch to a few hundred bytes. The AuroraWatch UK data is in Nano Teslas (nT) and the SWPC data uses the Kp-scale (semi-logarithmic). Where both sets of data are shown on the same scale, both are adjusted to the Kp-scale to improve clarity but the individual views use the native scales. For more details on alert levels and the K=p-scale, please refer to the sources linked to above.
