Paper, not pixels. A watch face built to read like a page rather than a screen: warm off-white stock, near-black ink, and type spaced the way print spaces it instead of the way software usually does. The layout is a masthead. The time sits above a hairline rule, the day name is set wide beneath it, and the full date sits below that. One optional line - battery, steps, heart rate or calories - runs above the time like a running head. Everything else is margin, deliberately. TWO STATES, AND THE SECOND ONE IS THE POINT A page is light. An AMOLED panel has to light every one of those pixels, and Garmin caps an always-on watch face at roughly 10% of pixels lit. So the face turns over when you lower your wrist: ink on black, time alone, measured at 5.2% of the display lit. Raise your wrist and it flashes once - a single inverted frame, 140 milliseconds - before settling back onto paper. That is the refresh flash of an e-reader turning a page, and it is the moment the whole thing works. While it is dimmed the time also drifts a few pixels each minute, so nothing burns into the panel. No sensor history, no location, no phone access, no network. It reads the clock, the battery, and the step and heart-rate figures the watch already keeps. Built for the Venu 2 and Venu 2 Plus.
