Nordlys Fjell
· v1.1
About
Nordlys Fjell puts the northern lights behind your training data.
A photographic aurora backdrop on AMOLED, a hand-drawn aurora on MIP, and on top of it the live metrics you choose yourself — laid out so the numbers stay big enough to read at a glance mid-run.
WHAT'S ON THE DIAL
• Big, tabular time with live seconds and the date • Seven configurable metric slots — top, either side of the time, bottom • A goal arc up the left edge that fills as you close your target • A three-column centre block, chosen as a set • 60-minute rim ticks with accented quarters • Three layouts, from seven fields to three, the type growing as the count falls
PICK YOUR CENTRE BLOCK
Four presets, each answering one question rather than showing three unrelated figures:
• RUNNER — today's distance, your last run's pace, your 7-day total • TRAVELLER — three world clocks, labelled by city code • HEALTH — sleep score (or 7-day resting HR), stress, Body Battery • WALKER — steps, floors, weekly active minutes
The world clocks carry a real daylight-saving rule for every one of 40+ zones, not a fixed offset — so they stay right in March and October, when a lazier face is an hour wrong for half the year.
SEVEN SLOTS, FIFTEEN METRICS
Heart rate · steps · calories · altitude · temperature · floors climbed · battery · distance today · intensity minutes · VO2 max · Body Battery · recovery time · sunrise · sunset · stress — or off.
Every slot takes any of them. Each is a crisp icon over a large value: no caption clutter, no squinting. VO2 max even prints your Garmin fitness band — SUPERIOR, EXCELLENT — coloured to match.
CHOOSE HOW MUCH, AND HOW BIG
One setting changes how much is on the dial and how large it's drawn:
• FULL — seven fields and the centre block, at the shipped sizes • BALANCED — five fields, everything about a seventh larger • FOCUS — three fields, type a third larger, and a time taller than any other layout can fit
Nothing is scaled up and left to collide: each step clears a band of the dial and gives the space to the numbers that remain. Your slot choices are kept whichever layout you pick, so Focus for a week and back to Full leaves the dial exactly as you had it.
MAKE IT YOURS
• Six accent colours: aurora green, ice cyan, violet, amber, coral, sky blue. One setting recolours the colon, seconds, quarter ticks, goal arc and every icon together. • Five backdrops: Curtains Over the Lake, Valley, Fjord, Corona, or pure black for maximum battery and contrast. • Show or hide the brand mark. • Point the goal arc at whichever metric you're chasing.
BUILT FOR YOUR SCREEN, NOT A GENERIC ONE
Most faces are designed for AMOLED and then shipped to everything. This one is drawn twice. AMOLED gets photographic backdrops at your panel's exact pixel count, plus a dimmed always-on view that shifts every minute to protect the display. MIP watches get a palette picked from the 64 colours those panels can genuinely render, heavier type, a redrawn layout, and second-by-second ticking in low power. Icons and Barlow Condensed fonts are generated at the exact size they're drawn — never stretched, never blurry.
DESIGNED TO BE EASY ON THE BATTERY
Only the data your chosen preset needs is ever read: pick Traveller and the seven-day activity history is never walked, pick Runner and the sleep score is never fetched. World clocks rebuild on the minute, not every frame.
WORKS WITH
56 round Garmin watches: fenix 7 / 8 / E, epix Pro, Enduro 3, Forerunner 165 / 255 / 265 / 570 / 955 / 965, Venu 2 / 3, vivoactive 5 / 6, MARQ 2, Descent, Approach and D2. Requires firmware with Connect IQ 5.0+.
NOTES
Sleep score needs a watch and firmware that publish it; where it isn't available the Health preset shows 7-day resting heart rate instead. Some metrics (VO2 max, Body Battery, recovery time, temperature, altitude) depend on your watch's sensors and recorded activity.
Set it up in Garmin Connect › your watch › Connect IQ Apps › Nordlys Fjell › Settings.
What's new
Two new settings: choose how much is on the dial, and what colour it is
drawn in. Plus the fenix 9 series.
LAYOUT
A new Layout setting trades fields for type size. Three presets:
FULL Seven slots and the centre block, at the sizes the face
shipped with.
BALANCED Five slots, the bottom row keeps only its centre, with
everything about a seventh larger.
FOCUS Three slots, no centre block, type about a third larger and
a time nearly a fifth taller than any other preset can fit.
Each layout is drawn to its own geometry rather than scaled up, so a
bigger number never means a tighter dial. Switching presets only changes
which slots are drawn, it never rewrites your assignments, so you can
try Focus for a week and come back to exactly the dial you had.
ACCENT COLOUR
A new Accent colour setting, with six to pick from: aurora green (the
original), ice cyan, violet, amber, coral and sky blue. One choice
recolours the whole face together — the colon, the live seconds, the
centre block's column headings, the quarter ticks, the goal arc and all
fourteen metric icons. Each colour is authored twice, once for AMOLED
and once from the 64 colours a MIP panel can genuinely render, so it
looks deliberate on either screen.
Both settings are on your phone: Garmin Connect . your watch .
Connect IQ Apps . Nordlys Fjell . Settings.
NEW WATCHES
The fenix 9 series, in every size: fenix 9, 9 Pro and 9 Pro Solar. The
9 Pro 51mm has a 466px panel no earlier watch had, and its backdrops,
icons, logo and all ten fonts are authored at that size rather than
scaled up from a smaller one — so the dial is as sharp there as it is
anywhere else. The 9 Pro Solar gets the MIP design, drawn from the 64
colours those panels can genuinely render.
Also new: D2 Mach 2 Pro.
