Rucking for Everyone
· v0.31.0
About
This is an independent Rucking activity app for all Garmin watches. Set the pack weight and terrain type in the app settings using the Connect IQ app or directly on the watch. The kcalories/kJ and MET metrics (FULL version) take into account ruck weight.
# Features
* Displays elevation, elevation graph, distance, elapsed time and pace (1st screen)
* Displays % grade, grade graph, energy expended (kcal or kJ), HR zone or HR, and time of day (2nd screen)
* Energy expenditure units can be set to kcal or kJ
* Set the ruck weight and terrain factor (see guidance below) in the app settings. (The units for the weight are determined by the weight units setting in your user profile settings) To change the ruck weight on the watch use the MENU button (long press left middle button on 5 button watches; long press bottom right button on 2 button watches). A Garmin model with Connect IQ version 3.0.0 or higher is required.
* Saves the ruck weight, terrain factor, in the FIT file for viewing with the activity summary in the Garmin Connect app.
* Saves trend of HR, pace and elevation to the FIT file for graphical viewing in the Garmin Connect app.
* Accounts for backpack or weighted vest ruck types
* The activity can be saved as a hike or walk in Garmin Connect. (Garmin treats rucking as a sub-category of hiking).
# FULL Version Features
* Saves trend of grade and estimated energy expenditure (EE) rate to the FIT file for graphical viewing in the Garmin Connect app.
* Saves the estimated total energy burned, average uphill speed, and average downhill speed in the FIT file for viewing with the activity summary in the Garmin Connect app.
* Option to save METs, MET-h, average METs OR ruck work (distance x ruck weight) and ruck power (ruck work/time) to the activity session record in Garmin Connect.
* Optionally display heading direction (or direction orientation for Garmin models with a magnetometer sensor)
* Option to show elevation change (numerically and on the graph) instead of absolute elevation
NOTE:
By comparing the estimated total energy expended to Garmin's total kcal burned, we can evaluate how much Garmin inherently accounts for the ruck weight in its algorithm. If you perform the activity with zero ruck weight, and do the same comparison, the result should come out equal (ideally). Perform a test on a uniform grade path at uniform speed to compare kcal expended with other available rucking calculators. Please provide feedback on what results you get.
# How to set the terrain factor
1.0 = paved road, treadmill
1.1 = dirt road
1.2 = light brush, gravel road
1.5 = heavy brush
1.7 = ice, slippery hard clay
1.8 = swampy bog
2.1 = loose sand
2.5 = soft snow 15 cm
2.7 = snow with snowshoes
3.3 = soft snow 25 cm
4.1 = soft snow 35 cm
NOTE: The terrain factor can be changed during the activity from the watch or using the Garmin Connect IQ app. The new value will take effect immediately (data up to that point will still use the previous value), but only the last value is stored in the Garmin Connect activity record.

What's new
Version 0.31.0
Added an option to select between HR and HR zone for display.
Version 0.30.1, 0.30.2
Added support for more devices.
Version 0.30.0
Added a setting to enable/disable the ESC button. Disable the ESC button to prevent accidental presses of the button from terminating the activity. On some Garmin models the ESC button can be used to switch to the watchface and the widget carousel and then to return to the activity. In this case, enable the ESC button to do this. On most Garmin models however the ESC button will terminate the activity app, so you have to start a new one to continue.
Version 0.27.0, 0.28.0, 0.29.0
Attempt to fix problem with ruck weight and terrain factor not being saved in the session record.
Version 0.26.0
Removed subsport classification to prevent crash on Vivoactive 3 and other older models.
Version 0.25.0
Added timer shutdown code.
Version 0.24.0
Added display of HR zone for values below zone 1.
Version 0.23.0
Attempt to fix problem where screen updates stop when one switches to a widget and then returns during the activity.
Version 0.22.0
Attempt to fix problem where GPS is turned off when one switches to a widget and then returns during the activity. Removed rucking selection from activity type to save as because Garmin treats rucking as a sub-sport within hiking.
Version 0.21.0
Added the ability to save the activity as a "run". Note that the calories expended metric is only valid for speeds under 7km/h. This will not directly affect Garmin's VO2max metrics if used.
Version 0.20.0
Attempted to correct crash on some models.
Version 0.19.0
Added a GNSS satellites setting to be able to select desired satellites to use. Use of multple satellite systems can reduce acquisition time. A Garmin model with Connect IQ version 3.3.6 or higher is required for this.
Version 0.18.0
Allowed swipe up/down action on the Vivoactive 3 to be able to select between Y and N actions on the "Save and Exit? Y/N" screen.
Version 0.17.0
Added defensive shutdown code to address possible power consumption issue on some devices.
Version 0.16.0
Allowed the START/STOP button to pause the activity while the "Save and exit? Y/N" screen is shown.
Version 0.15.0
Minor optimization.
Version 0.14.0
PRO Version only change: Added option to display elevation change instead of absolute elevation.
Version 0.13.0
Changed grade graph to be different colors for positive and negative grade values on color displays.
Version 0.12.0
Corrected crash on Forerunner 55 after GPS lock.
Version 0.11.2
Added support for more models.
Version 0.11.1
Changed default activity type to save as to "Hiking". Rucking may not be supported on some older Garmin models. Changed session name to always be "Rucking" regardless of the selected activity type to save as. This is a workaround to the aforementioned limitation.
Version 0.11.0
Corrected crash on start up on some older models like Forerunner 245, 945.
Version 0.10.1
Added support for the Instinct Crossover. Customized workout name according to the save setting.
Version 0.10.0
Added ability to save the activity as a ruck, hike or walk in Garmin Connect. Added vibration alert after GPS is ready. Added indication of watch battery level if 5% or less. Continued recording when the "Save and Exit?" confirmation screen is displayed.
Version 0.9.0
Added an exit confirmation screen. You get to this by pressing the STOP button (top right). Prevented app from exiting accidentally when the BACK button is pressed while the activity is in progress.
Version 0.8.0
FULL Version only change: Corrected crash when compass heading direction indicator enabled.
Version 0.7.0
Changed to start the recording session only after START is pressed. Changed the app icon.
Version 0.6.0
Changed the graph on the 2nd screen to display grade. Corrected graph max value labelling. Improved graph scaling. Increased the graph update rate.
