About
Two-way live link between your Garmin and the BikeOtter phone app.
BikeOtter is a third-party companion app for bike computers. This data field is
the bridge between it and your Garmin: your ride data goes to the phone, and
the things only the phone knows come back to your screen. Works on Edge bike
computers and on watches with a cycling activity.
WHAT YOUR PHONE SENDS TO THE FIELD
The cell shows one line, chosen by priority so the most urgent thing wins:
• A message from someone following your live ride — "Anna: on my way"
• A detour waiting for your confirmation — "Detour +2.3 km"
• The next point of interest on your route — "Cafe 4.2 km"
• Otherwise, the app's own standing — "Phone linked", or "Live (3)" while
three people are watching you ride
Every line is written by the phone in your language and your units, so it
matches the app exactly.
WHAT THE FIELD SENDS TO YOUR PHONE
Once a second: heart rate, power, cadence, speed, altitude, distance, timer
state and position. BikeOtter uses them for live tracking, its ride recording,
weather along your route, and its alerts. Your ride starts recording on the
phone by itself when you start the timer on the Edge.
WHAT YOU NEED
• The BikeOtter app on your phone
Android: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.openbikecontrol.bikeotter
iPhone: apps.apple.com/app/id6797833054
• The Garmin Connect app, with this Edge paired in it — every message is
relayed through it
• This field added to a data screen you actually ride with. Connect IQ only
runs a data field while its screen is visible, so data flows then and not
before
Nothing to switch on in BikeOtter: it listens for this field by itself. Settings
› Head unit shows you where the link stands.
WHILE IT IS WORKING
The cell reads "Waiting for phone" until the app speaks, and returns to it if
the app goes quiet for more than two minutes — so a blank-looking field is
telling you something, not broken.
Nothing is sent to any server by this field. It talks to your phone, and the
phone is where you decide what leaves it.
