Elevation Change
· v0.7
About
Displays the altitude/elevation change (total ascent minus total descent).
Elevation change is displayed in metres or feet, depending on the altitude units in your device settings.
━━━━━━━━━━━━
NOTE on accuracy: Total ascent and total descent are provided by the watch (not calculated by the app). If the watch does not have a barometric altimeter (e.g. most Forerunners), then elevation data comes from GPS data, which may not be totally accurate. (This is why Garmin Connect automatically corrects elevation data for watches without a barometric altimeter).
Also, the displayed elevation change may not be the same as::
- Looking at the altitude at the start of the activity (Starting Altitude)
- Looking at the altitude right now (Current Altitude)
- Calculating: Current Altitude - Starting Altitude
This is because Garmin uses its own algorithms to filter total ascent and total ascent, in order to get rid of junk data. For example, with watches that have a barometric altimeter, you might see the elevation change when you are standing still, because the barometric pressure is changing. Garmin's algorithms attempt to filter that kind of thing out.
In my experience, Total Ascent - Total Descent is more accurate then Current Altitude - Starting Altitude, but neither seems to be perfect. Your mileage may vary.
