Memory Boost
· v1.3
About
This app allows you to improve your memory using a scientifically proven method. Research suggests that specific, rapid horizontal eye movements—known as saccadic eye movements—can significantly increase the brain's ability to remember things it has previously seen or experienced. Horizontal saccadic eye movements (rapid, jerky movements) performed for just 30 seconds led to a selective improvement in episodic memory. Such lateral (sideways) eye movements lead to increased activation of the opposite (contralateral) hemisphere. (Christman et al. 2003)
After selecting “Memory Boost,” a dot changes sides on the display every 500 ms. Hold the watch about 30-40 cm away from your face and follow the dot closely with your eyes. This exercise is particularly beneficial for right-handed people with better memory performance (Qin, X. J., et al. 2021), resulting in positive effects for learning and other cognitive activities.
A second feature of this app is box breathing. Navy SEALs, among others, use this breathing technique to remain calm and focused stressful situations. It involves breathing in evenly, holding your breath, breathing out, and holding your breath again. The menu allows you to set the frequency to 3, 4, 5, or 6 seconds. You can also set a timer for 3, 5, or 10 minutes. It is possible to activate the heart rate display, signal tones (if supported by the watch), and vibration.
With this app, you can first put yourself in a calm state based on scientific principles and then prepare your mind for focused cognitive work in which memory plays a decisive role. The methods can be selected via the touchscreen and the up/down buttons.
