About

According to Wikipedia Orienteering is a group of sports that require navigational skills using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in diverse and usually unfamiliar terrain whilst moving at speed. Participants are given a topographical map, usually a specially prepared orienteering map, which they use to find control points. The control points are called posts. Best known orienteering sports are foot orienteering, mountain bike orienteering, ski orienteering, and trail orienteering. The Orienteering datafield implements an orienteering variant without a map. The „post order“ application setting defines the navigation order from post to post (0 = from first to last, 1 = shuffle posts before navigating). The "number of active posts" application setting defines the number of posts to be used in the current activity. The "start at post number" property defines the start post. This property can be used as work around to skip a post for lack of button input in a datafield. The watch displays elapsed time (top), heartrate (bottom) and navigation information (center). The navigation information in the center contains the number of remaining posts (e.g. 2) and the direct distance to the next post (e.g. 210 meters). If the post distance is less than the distance threshold (application setting e.g. 10 meters), the post is found and the navigation information is updated according to the next post. When the last post is found, the navigation information shows the elapsed distance and the current speed. A blue arrow in the center shows the current move direction and a red outer rim arc shows the direction to the next post. If the current move direction matches the direction to the next post, arrow and arc turn green. How to use the orienteering datafield: 1) Define up to 29 posts in your training area (e.g. via Google maps) and enter latitude and longitude coordinates as application settings in Garmin Connect. 2) Select „Shuffle post order“ in the application settings to randomize the navigation order of the posts. 3) Define "number of active posts" in the application settings. E.g. your goal is to find 10 of 29 posts. 4) Start the orienteering datafield and find the posts. Have fun.
