About
Lose count while running stair sprints? Let Stairs count for you.
Anyone who's hammered stair or hill repeats knows the feeling: lungs burning, you genuinely can't remember what rep you're on. Tired of using stones or sticks to keep count?
Stairs does the counting for you. Press start and climb — it reads your watch's barometric altimeter and counts every up-and-down rep automatically. No buttons, no glancing down, no breaking stride. A buzz and a beep mark each rep, so your head stays up and your hands stay free.
And it times every lap, so you know in the moment whether you're holding your pace or fading. The main screen is built like a sprinter's race clock: a bold lap timer and your reps ticking around the rim.
When you stop, Stairs scores your 2-minute heart-rate recovery — the faster your heart drops, the fitter you are — then lays out the full story: total reps, total vertical metres, best and average rep time, peak and average heart rate, calories, and your climbing speed.
Every session syncs to Garmin Connect as a Floor Climbing activity, with per-rep laps, your full heart-rate trace, and a GPS map.
Count your way — pick how Stairs spots a rep:
Baseline (default — best for a normal staircase)
When you press START, Stairs takes your current altitude as zero (you'll see the altitude read 0 on screen). That's your start line. Run down the stairs and back up, and the rep fires the moment you're back at zero. Starting at the bottom instead? Run up and back down — same thing, it fires when you return to zero. Either way, one rep = one round trip back to where you started.
Turnaround (for mixed or uneven flights)
No fixed start line. Stairs just watches for an up-then-down: climb far enough (past Min ascent) for long enough (past Min sustain), then turn and head back — that counts as a rep. Ideal when every flight is a different size.
Manual
No auto-detection. Tap the lap button at the end of each rep. Every stat is still recorded; you're just calling the reps yourself.
Invert counter
By default Baseline fires when you get back to your start altitude. Turn this on and it fires at the far turnaround instead — the moment Stairs sees you change direction at the top (or bottom). Same number of reps; it just moves where the beep fires.
Reset baseline
Over a long set the barometer (or GPS) can slowly drift, which nudges reps early or late. Pause, tap Reset Baseline, and resume: it re-zeros to where you're standing (stand at the same end you started from) and carries on counting. Works in Barometer and GPS + Baro.
Altitude, your choice:
- Barometer — rock-steady for short, sharp stair sets. (best for most)
- GPS + Baro — GPS-anchored for long climbs and big mountain days.
Works great for: stair sprints, hill repeats, and any hard vertical interval session — plus car-park climbs, ski-touring, and tower running.
What's new
What's New — v1.0.3
• Reset Baseline — pause part-way through a set and reset your counting baseline to clear any altimeter drift, so reps keep counting accurately on long climbs. (Pause at the same end you started from, tap Reset Baseline, then resume.)
• Tidier pause menu — reordered to Resume, Reset Baseline, Save, Recovery HR, Discard.
• Change your counting mode (Barometer / GPS + Baro / Manual) any time in Settings.
